To start off I struggled to sharpen Buck's S30V on my SharpMaker (no diamond sticks). So I picked up a Buck Tri Stone sharpener. From the start I have been getting a very sharp edge using the Buck. I start with the Buck Tri Stone and finish with the SharpMaker. Here is my question on the Tri Stone the white stone that is marked "medium" seems to be a finer grit than the diamond stone marked "fine". So when I sharpen I go from the Coarse to the fine, then finish with the medium. I was curious if any of you use this system and maybe my stones are in the wrong order. In other words could it be the fine (orange) and medium (white) are miss labeled.

Fine

Medium

Coarse

So two diamond plates and a stone. The stone looks to be a Arkansas stone not broke in. A soft Arkansas (500 grit)or Washita (400 grit). Natural stones are hard to place a grit number on.So with a coarse diamond (Smith I think who's those are) they are near 325 grit. The fine around 600 grit. So, the other stone is in between, When I use a diamond plate to sharpen my blades on I usually use just the coarse. It leaves a good, sharp, toothy edge. DM

How do I break an Arkansas stone in? When a stone "breaks in" does it make it higher or lower grit? I use water when I use the sharpener.

Water is ok. Soapy water like Simple Green is better. Then wipe it off when finished. When a stone is broke in the grit doesn't change. No matter what one does they cannot change the grit of a stone as that's fixed from day one. It's surface is made smoother feeling from use. This helps it feel finer and leave a finer looking edge on the blade. Even the diamond stones will feel finer from use. Use light pressure on the diamond stone as it's grain structure can break off. DM

I have the same set up,it's made by smiths for buck.i sharpen all my knives including all kitchen knives with this set up.the white stone uses a special lubricating oil that comes with the set.it works great with the stone, giving a nice finished edge, then I use a strop to polish the finished edge to wicked sharp.lol

You have to remember when they refer to the diamond stones it's coarse and fine diamond stones, the medium is a regular stone..

What are you meaning by 'is a regular stone'? Is it a Arkansas, Norton India or crystalline? ect.. DM

By regular I mean not a diamond stone DM.the stone is a medium Arkansas.its a very good system ,I've got lots of sharpeners and always go for my tri hone!
