It may be an unusual choice here on bladeforums, but the Buck Vanguard is my all-time-favorite fixed blade. I really don't have a problem with the nylon sheath that came with this knife, but I always wanted to try my hand at sheach making. I decided that my first attempt at working with leather should be for my Vanguard. It takes care of me, so I'm just returning the favor.
The sheath is made from a single piece of veg-tanned leather, which was shaped, oil dyed, and then dipped in hot wax and mink oil to waterproof it. The design might not appeal to everyone, but it is what I like in a sheath. The knife sits very deep in the pouch and requires two hands (and sometimes a verbal command) to get the knife free.
Now I have made a couple of "sheaths" before, but not out of leather. They are actually more of blade covers for a couple of machettes, but they did teach me something about sheath-making.
Any comments are welcome. I hope some of you pro leather-benders can give me some tips.
