I have a Vanguard that I got in 1987 and I'm wondering if it has some value as a collectable knife.
The Blade is stamped;
BUCK
692 C
USA
Any info would be helpful.

uh,,,that C is the year code for 1995 if it is rounded, or 1999 if it is boxed. 1987 is a >

Not really valuable unless mint and someone needs one for a collection.

Is it mint in the box with all the papers?

What handle does it have?

As the man says......."It all depends."

I don't see anything so far that would indicate collectible, but you'll hear more, no doubt.

692 is usually the rubber handle... least what mine says.
Those are worth less than the wood.

I see 1986 is a < symbol on one list I have.....that's kind of hard to mistake for a C, though.

It is a rubber handle. I think I got it when I was in the Coast Guard in 19987, but I could be wrong. It is not mint nor do I have the box or papers. I would say it is clean with some wear. I have sharpened it. I guess this will be a good knife for the truck or tool box.

Welcome to the forum T Bass. Watch the heck out running around Austin. My sister will smooth run you over.

Here is a chart showing the stamp codes on the Tang of Buck knives. Pretty much verify s their birth year.

I recently bought a NIB Vanguard made in the 90's for $35 shipped from the for sale forum here. Also bought an ATS-34 Vanguard from the Buck Web Specials for $40.

That mistake happens all the time. I had one seller say he'd had a Buck in his safe for over twenty years, but the funny thing was, the knife was only 10 years old! The memory plays strange tricks sometimes.

The Vanguard's rubber handles may not be worth as much as a rosewood or custom handle, but those rosewood ones on the Vanguard are slippery. The rubber gives a better grip in Northwest rainforest or water use. Good user I think.

I have used a rubber handle Vanguard S30V quartering up a deer. The grip is excellent and the knife cut great. Is one of the reasons I have long called for rubber handles on a 110 S30V.
