Buck vantage force pro discoloration?

Today I received a new Buck vantage force pro in OD green. I really like the knife, it has a perfect lockup and centering. However, one of the first things I noticed was a line of what at first appeared to be some sort of rust on both sides of the knife where the blade starts to thicken up toward the handle. After more examination I found more of it on the gimping of the blade (but not on the spacer gimping), and a small amount on the cut outs of the blade tang and opening hole. I'm not sure if it is rust or not though, it's more of an orange copper color then a red rust color, also it's only where the machining of the blade is. Could it be from the stone washing or machining processes? S30V is rather difficult to rust in my experience, especially for a brand new knife. I tried wiping it off several time with no success. I also own two other of the regular Buck vantage pro knives (both with satin finishes), and neither one have this discoloration on it. It doesn't bother me too much, but I'm just not sure what it is or if I should return the knife.

I can't tell you what the discoloring is, but I have the same Vantage Force Pro in OD, and mine did not come like that. I got it about 6 months ago and it was perfect out of the box. I guess it's possible, but like you, I find it hard to believe that the s30v would come with rust. If it doesn't wipe or polish off I would inform Buck and see what they think. Being Buck, if it's something to be concerned about or even something you simply don't like, you know they'll make it right.

The last 2 Buck Vantage Force Pro's (Green) I have seen has had the coloring that yours has. My Force Pro (Green) should arrive later today. I'll let you know how mine looks.

I didn't know that could happen from the heat of the grinding wheel, that makes more sense, since its only where it was machined. The color doesn't bother me too much, I'm more worried about the blade rusting. Thanks fzla226
The only way I would think to get it off is sandpaper, but that would probably screw up the stone washing.

This adds nothing to the thread, but I have to say that green handle really kicks up the Buck vantage a notch!

cchu518 I agree with you that it is a heck of a nice looking knife.

That is residual Heat treat stain. There would be no effect other than cosmetics. With the stone wash finish, sometimes our tumbling process does not get all of it out.
It will not promote rust and to remove would require an abrasive of some sort.

Well that explains that nicely. Thanks Jeff.
