Buck Vantage Pro Small

I recently purchased a Paradigm pro. It's S30V blade tip cut into the spacer piece of metal on the clip end of the knife. It was impressive how the blade remained sharp, yet worked a small grove in the peice of metal. I returned the knife because of that issue and I also saw some videos that raised other concerns for me with the shift mechanism. Anyway I decided I would stick with a simpler model and get the Buck Vantage pro large. I placed an order for it...only thing is, I accidently clicked the "small" version button instead.

I open the package when it arrived and made the discovery as I looked at the tiny box...not the size I was expecting. I opened the box and held the little knife. Ehh..not bad. I slipped it into my pocket and headed to work. I then started practicing opening and closing it. Hmmm...not bad at all. By the end of the day, I thought, well let me just see about this knife...as a EDC. The S30V obviuosly cuts awesome just like my Paradigm. I was really starting to like the little knife.
Ok...so I'm going to keep it.
Here are some things I found with the knife. It is about the same size as my Case knifes. With some practice, the blade can be flicked out quite easily and quickly. It is very light. The blade is nice and thin and should hold up for along time. The blade is well centered. Absolutely no blade play in any direction.

The negatives. I don't think there are any grinding/finishing tools at the factory that made this knife....lol...remember this is coming from a Case knife guy. The back of the s30v blade that sticks out when its folded is actually quite sharp on its edges too. The G10 scales are bigger than the metal liners and are also sharp. If you like to flick the blade open with your pointer finger, you will find the liners are equally sharp on the inside portion of the liners. There is also something jiggling inside the knife...I cant figure out what that would be.

So here's what I'm thinking. I would like to sand these sharp unfinished edges down. Anyone work with G10 before wanna give me some sanding tips? Special recommended tools? I'm pretty confident on touching up the sharp raw edges on the metal liners after I take the knife apart. I've never tried working with S30V, but I dont think it will be that hard to roll the sharp corner edges down a bit. I'm seriously considering removing the clip and shaving down the spacer and G10 to make that indentation disappear too. You know, just let the knife rest at bottom of my pocket. Lets face it, this knife is not a serious defence knife and I can't find a need to have it clipped in a tactical manner on the brim of my pants pocket.

I have the small vantage select.

1. I agree with you, it's small enough to be pocket carried without the clip, which is my preference.
2. My 420 HC blade has well rounded corners on the spine.
3. The jiggling noise is the center spacer moving freely. To remedy, remove the first scale (only one can be removed first) and tighten the screw corresponding to the center spacer. One caveat, I would tighten the spacer while it is furthest away from the closed blade edge. To put it another way, withe the knife CLOSED, tighten it while the blade spine is UP, and the center spacer is DOWN, naturally falling away from the blade edge. It is possible for the knife to contact the center spacer in the closed position.
4. I don't have any experience working G10, but some sandpaper should do ya if you are only removing sharp edges.

I too have the small vantage, both a pro, and a select. I have never used a knife with a clip, just remove the clip and carry in my pocket. However I gave this knife a chance to carry with clip, and I am very pleased. It is one knife that I can totally use one handed. The knife rides low in pocket, and easy to pull out, open with flipper tang, use, and press linerlock and close with one hand. I don't have to waste any time using this knife one handed, and keep left hand on the object needing something cut. Size is also very aceptable. The larger vantage feels just a little large in right front pocket. Knife came perfectly centered, and fit and finish was also perfect. I'm a happy Buck customer.

894tom, what's the date on the box it came in? I Like using the clip when I wear loose fitting cargo shorts, when I wear the knife in my front T-shirt pocket, and it fits nicely in the tiny pocket on a pair of Levis. You might try OOOO fine steelwool on the G-10 edge. My blade spine edge is not sharp like my Avid is but the thumb hole on my Pro is sharp. When taking off the screws on G-10 scale make sure to have torx 6 bit and Loc-tite blue (242 or 243 or similar) on hand when you replace them and do not over tighten for they will strip out easily. The rattling spacer screw is either threaded and not tightened all the way snug or the screw is stripped out and not threaded at all. If screw is stripped call Buck and they might send you a replacement screw for free or you will have to send it in to them for repair. Make sure to add Loc-tite to spacer screw and pivot screw for the pivot screw seems to need adjustment all the time without it.

Thanks for tip #3.

My blade spine (corner edges) is so sharp I was shaving the edge of my plastic computer stand with it. Just so I'm totally clear...its not the blade's sharpened edge...lol...its nuts. And like the other poster wrote...I too can almost cut my thumb if I use the thumb hole because it inside edge is very sharp as well.

BUT...the little sucker is growing on me more and more by the minute. I can flick it open now with no problems either hand with no flick of the wrist. Really nice knife. Very happy with it.

I have a small Vantage Select that I really grew to enjoy.

I got a junk one the first time around ( see here ) that Buck took care of. The replacement wasn't perfect but it was good enough.

Carries nice and deep, the 420 gets very sharp with minimal effort, and makes for a nice all around EDC. It's like the little knife that could. :p
