Buck Vantage Select/SOG Aegis cutting experiment

I have had a SOG Aegis for some time and recently purchased a Buck Vantage Select with Dymonwood sides. Although I primarily carry my SOG for more "tactical" on duty use I prefer the Buck for off duty EDC. Just for fun I did a simple paper/business card cutting comparison and was pleasantly surprised at my findings. The SOG has an AUS8 flat ground blade and costs twice as much, the Buck as you all know about is 420HC and hollow ground. I wanted to use paper and business cards for the test so I could really "feel" how the blade was going through the material. The Buck sliced through the paper and business cards WAY easier and had far less drag. Both knives were very factory sharp at the time. WOW, what a difference, way to go Buck. I was truly amazed at how you could feel the difference in the blades as they went through the material, going fast and slow. I now have even more regard for Bucks. I always did, and own many of them I just never had a clue how much better they cut than even the SOG at twice the price. Don't get me wrong, I love my Aegis as a tactical carry knife, it just doesn't hold a candle to actual cutting ability of the Vantage. Nice. Any comments would be appreciated as to why this is, blade material, blade grind/geometry???

You're Vantage blade is made of better blade steel than the Sog and the Buck heat treatment is the best there is.Buck is known for it's out of the box sharp factory edge.If you really want to be impressed spend $150+ on a Benchmade and compare the two.:eek:In my experience you're Buck will beat it hands down.:)

SWEET!!! That is truly amazing about the Benchmade comparison. I have never owned/handled a Benchmade. I know there is allot of hype about them being the "Cadillac" of knives and they surely are expensive but I always had the feeling they're not worth the money. Not to say they don't build a quality product but why not get a Buck for a third the cost and still end up with a better knife. Seems more and more I keep running into comments/stories of Bucks cleaning the clocks of far more expensive knives. Nice.

One of the side-line issues in stating that you have a 'duty' knife. IS that if you happen to loose the knife the cost of a new Vantage will not make your wallet wail.

300Bucks (closet small Vantage person)
