Can anyone tell me the difference between the 420hc steel and the 13C26 Sandvik steel in these knives?

Thanks.

Buck says that the 420HC is a better choice for those of us who don't like to spend a lot of time oiling and taking care of our blades.

I have both and the Sandvic is a bit nicer IMO, it has a different sound on the stones too. It takes and holds a wicked sharp edge, corrosion hasn't ever been a problem. Check out this cardboard test!

No 13c26 is quit a bit better. IMO
I have all 3, 420HC, 13C26 and S30V. The Sandvik gets the most carry time. Holds a good edge and gets screaming sharp easily.
So there's no real difference in edge retention?

So what do you think of the S30V version? I'll probably order me a Sandivk one as well. I want to have one in the larger blade and one in the smaller blade. Seems like both knives are a great deal for what you get. Just curious why the Sandvik version gets more carry time that the others. What is it that you like about it better than the S30v?

Wow that's impressive. Thanks for sharing.

The S30V bladed version is quite a step up steel wise. I think you find s30v to hold it's edge much longer than either the sandvik and especially the 420HC. It's trade off is that it takes a bit longer to sharpen than the other two all things being equal. S30V is a premium steel and IMO worth the price, which is a very fair price at that.

The s30v is nice, but the knife its self is off. It is a very early one and the liner is worn all the way over to the right and has up and down blade play. I need to send it in and see what Buck can do with it. The 13c26 one has seen way more use and the lock is still fine.

Yes I have tried adjusting the knife by twisting it while tightening the screws. I also tried switching the lock side liners between the 2 knives. The one from the 13c26 was just as bad as the one that it came with. The blade tang lock face has to be the problem.

The newer Vantage Pros should be better. The G10 scales are also somewhat thicker, on the newer ones. My Daughters ex BF had a 2011 one that seemed like a totally different animal than my 2009.

I received my Vantage select and Vantage pro today. They are both centered, open smoothly, and lock up tight. Very nice. The select is my first knife with paperstone. Honestly, I like it better than the g10. Has a great feel to it.

You got a Select with Paperstone?
Buck told me four days ago that the Paperstone version of Selects was discontinued and out of stock.

Buck's 420HC holds an edge comparable to AUS8, their Sandvik holds an edge more similar to VG-10. 13c26 is a very pure and clean steel that buck hardens to 58-60hrc. Think of it like the stainless 5160. It's seen hardened in low 50s for knives that need a lot of toughness to around 60 for ones that need more edge holding.
