Fun story...

I work at my local Dicks sporting goods in the hunting/fishing/camping dpt. Today I was moving some freight out to the floor. While I was sorting through a whole box full of kids life jackets, I saw a clam packed Buck knife with the back of the package face up so I didnt know what it was. When I turned it over I was verry plesed to see that it was a new Buck Bucklite MAX (the largest version). I wanted to open it and get the feel of it but it was all glued shut. I dug deeper and found one more, and then the big one found its way into my hands. A Vantage Select (FRN handle with 420HC blade). I was able to slip it out of the pack and was immediatley impressed.

Fit and finish are all excellent. Fits my hand very well. Good sized blade with very good EDC blade steel (I love Bucks 420HC), ZERO up and down or side to side blade play. Good sturdy lockup. The flipper is fantastic, right out of the package it popped open without much effort (quite contrary to the Kershaw Skyline right out of the box). Blade was hair splitting sharp. The pocket clip is very nice. I like the low profile.

I immediatley set it to the side for myself. It was $29.99 ($24 after my discount ;)) I couldnt be happier with my purchase. My Tenacious isnt very happy though. It now has a direct competitor for my extreme value EDC spot.

O and I did get a chance to open up the Bucklite MAX. It is big, and the blade is a good shape with the same good steel, lockup, and no bladeplay but the handle didnt feel quite right, and it was stiff as all get out to open. I'm sure it would losen up, but I like the ability to adjust the tension on the Select. The MAX is pinned together. It was 24.99 and a great value... just not as great as the select.

Did I mention that Both these knives are USA made? :D

Now I just need to get my hands on the PRO!

The 347 Vantage Pro is an unreal bargain - even at the MSRP of $75. It has the same sized S30V blade as the $350+ #172 Mayo TNT. The CNC contoured G10 feels great - just slick enough to still have a great and secure 'grab'. Below you'll see it with my shocker of a tenth anniversary gift a week or so back - a Benchmade 635BK mini-Skirmish (S30V). Yeah, the BM is nicer - but the Buck is no slouch - and it's a bit sharper, too. That Bos heat-treated blade is super. In all seriousness, Buck's 420HC is pretty darned nice, too. Made in the USA is nice, too.

Yes it came with a clip - so did the BM. I carry pocket knives in my pocket - and clip a flashlight to the pocket. One day I'll wheelbarrow the clips I've removed to the recycling center... Seriously, I am not a clip person. The 347 is mounted on the pointed end of the blade - and is reversible as to side - tip up only.

Thanks for the comparison stainz. I really want a Pro now!! and it's afordable. Maybe my GF will get me one for my birthday.

I recently picked up a Buck Vantage Pro that was made in early November. The lock-up and blade-play issues have been fixed as far as I can tell.

I am not a big fan of liner-locks in general. It is the first knife I have had with a flipper too.

It is one of the best bargains around in knives — I hope that they come out with a larger 3.75-inch blade version!

I wish the flipper was just a tad bigger--it doesn't work 100% of the time for me.

I took the Dremel to mine and made a little more thumb room for the opening hole and contoured the locking liner to match. I hope I didn't weaken it too much, but it's not really a hard use knife for me anyway.

I do agree that it's a great value, and the fact it's made here is a real plus as well.

I received a Buck Vantage 345 from my crew from work and it's been a dandy medium size knife. Smooth and solid and the 420HC is as good and familiar as my Buck 110's. I like the low profile pocket clip and I have never been a slave to "tip up or tip down" so it's just fine for my left pocket. I believe I will own all the knives in this series. I think Buck did their homework on this one! ;)

:D

I justed picked up the Select also and so far I realy like it.I have never used Bucks 420hc yet so I will see how it holds up.The Avid may be my next.

Yeah, I think Buck hit a home run with this one!

Great value for the price, well designed and executed.

"Jaaaaaake?" - Pro calling you name. ;)

I got the Select first and then like it so much I got the Pro. 2 of them! :D They are both great knives in their respective price classes. The Pro is near the top of my EDC rotation.

What an old thread! haha. Still havent got a Pro, and dont see myself getting one in the near future. I just dont carry folders that much anymore. Dang Izula :)

My pro kicked several big names out of my pocket (eg. Mini Manix, Blur, Lahar). :)

Best bang for the buck IMO.:thumbup::thumbup:
