A week ago I ordered two of the small Buck Vantage knives from SMKW, and they arrived Monday. I did not realise there were two different sizes and I thought they were the same size I had seen in Dicks for $10 more. That said, I really liked these knives! I had not been as impressed with the recent two Bucklites I bought, but these seem much better to me. I liked them so much, that after seeing SMKW did not offer the larger size in the plain handles, I went to Dicks with my trusty $10 off coupon and bought two of the #345 Vantage ( Lagre ones). They are great knives! Handle well and open smooth as silk. In fact the only issue I have with them is that in NY they will be considered gravity knives, so my carry will be limited to fishing/hunting/trapping with these as you can not tighten the blade. I may go for the other large ones in the two better steels! Please make them with a bigger detent that will prevent the blade from flicking so easy!! Other wise, I am once again one happy customer. Here is a link since I can post pics. These are everywhere prices so no price spotting per se.

Tom,
If you put a 1/4 turn into the pivot screw, it will tighten the travel more to
your liking. I did it to center the blade and a little tighter open was a by-product.

I'm waiting to see the vantage pro at my local BPS - they keep running out of stock... but I was comparing that vantage to the griptilian and sog elite and thought it was pretty good for the price - and the pro for a little more has s30v steel.

imafritz, Stupid me! I did not trun it around and see there was a screw! I will try it!

I just tightened them down and removed the pocket clips on one small and one large and they are now perfect! The large one needs some break in now to be sure the lock engages, and the flipper is of little help now, but the thumb hole and some good thumb strenght gets them open and they can not be flicked anymore!

Does the bigger model still has the nylon washers or are they upgraded to bronze washers?

I had another $10 off cupon for Dicks, so I got another two of these tonight...Like them alot!

Just bought one of these this morning. I went into the store saying, "I'm only going to buy a new Arkansas Stone." I came out with an Arkansas Stone and one of these; but it was almost free after a discount and a sale so, whatever. Seems like a good knife though, not that I'd expect any less.

Tom, I'm no lawyer but I've been a cop in NYS for 20+ years and definitely do not think the Vantage fits the gravity knife definition. Now, I can't say some gung ho dope wouldn't lock you up for it but I can't see that ever sticking. I would suggest you contact the DA for your county and see what they think, put "NY gravity knife definition" into google and check out some of the info, even butterfly knives aren't gravity knives by case law in NY.

Buckaroo661, I assume you live up state? In NYC and Nassau and Suffok any knife that can flick open is a gravity knife to the DA and all three departments in those listed jurisdiction (PL 265.01 charge). I am a former Captain from the city. I wish I was wrong, but I have seen many people charged that way and the DA has run with it. Now that I am a memeber of the public again, I follow the laws. The law wasn't actively enforced this way till about 15 years ago in NYC and the last few years in Nassau/Suffork. The city has actually raided stores and arrested the staff for selling knives that flick open and calling them gravity knives.....I have even seen it hold up in court when the blade is held and the handles flicked open. NYC is the worst for sure.

I should have qualified my answer right off the bat, NYC is a whole different animal, as you know better than I! Hopefully the trend isn't moving north, I don't think it will, there's a different attitude outside NYC regarding knives in general I think, people are much more used to seeing them. I have never heard of a person being arrested for having anything close to one of these types of knives, although now my interest is piqued, I'm going to contact my DA's office just to see what their reaction is, I won't be collaring anyone for carrying anything close to a Vantage.

What a shame to see things enforced like that, talk about violating the spirit of the law.

Actually, spring assisted is sold here in Nassau, Suffolk and elsewhere. In NYC ( and maybe Nassau) they consider it a gravity knife if you can flick it, even though it is spring assisted and most can be flicked. Otherwise they consider it a dangerous weapon in that it is designed for use as a weapon.....Most outside NYC officers would not take someone in for a simple knife possession, but in NYC they consider it a good arrest in response to a robbery issue. Two nights ago there was a young woman slashed with a razor outside a mall I manage in Brooklyn. The next day, the NYPD went after any knife they could find on anyone in repsonse. Several summons were issued and few arrested. A gravity knife in and of itself is a class A Misd, if you have any previous conviction for any crime it is a Class D felony just to possess it! Buckaroo let me know what you find out up state!

"...went after any knife they could find on anyone in repsonse."

Nothin' like good ole fashion knee jerk to end a crime wave.
