The two models in question are Buck's Tanto Nighthawk and Cold Steel's SRK. I have both, but the Buck's never been used. The SRK has been (ab)used and has survived the years with some maintenance.

In reality I know very little about these knives, both bought at a PX in Bosnia (2000). Anyone care to enlighten me? And yes, I am also running through the old threads searching for both of them. This time it's more of a direct comparison...

Thanks all!

This will probably be moved to the General Discussion forum. The Nighthawk is a very tactical looking knife, without being too tactical. If the steel was of a higher grade than 420HC, and there was no blade coating, I might pick it up. For the knife itself, I have seen very good users with 420HC steel, but I really don't like blade coatings. I think with a few simple mods by their RD team, and a better steel, the Nighthawk would be a great knife.

I have owned the Recon Tanto from Cold Steel, and did not like it that much. Dull, off balance etc. I have seen several SRK models, and found the model I was holding to feel pretty good. The edge was razor sharp. That was an old Carbon V model, I'm guessing yours is a Carbon V model. Anyway, I think these were made by Camillus? Might be wrong. Since Camillus went under, I don't know who has their contract. They have switched over to a new steel, don't know who the manufacturer is. IMHO, I would remove the coating on the SRK, as I have heard it is a great knife. The owner of the company is a pompous nut, but his crew has made some good knives.

Thanks for the input. You're right, my SRK is a Canbon V model. But hy would you remove the coating? Yes, it is wearing down and isn't the prettiest thing to look at, but it does provide some protection, right? This isn't a dressy knife carried by it's looks...

Hi, I have the old Carbon V model of the CS SRK. I've had it for about 14 years now??? I think. I have literally abused the crap out of this little knife and it has withstood everything I have thrown at it. A real no frills hardcore work knife.

I have one of the new SRKs. They are made in Japan and are AUS8 and mine came super sharp. I wish I would have gotten one of the CarbonV ones also but to bad. It gives me a reason to get the Falkniven A1 though.
