Buck Whitaker, what's the loop for?

I got a Buck Whitaker, it's a nice little knife but I don't have a clue what the loop in the handle is supposed to be used for. It's way too big just to be a lanyard hole. Anyone know? Here's a pic of the knife.

Earl, thanks for the link! It doesn't mention what the loop is for but since it was designed by a mountain climber I guess they made the loop big enough that a rope could fit through it.
