i had an old Buck Nighthawk that didn't really see any use because (early in it's life) i cracked the handle. it wasn't really that bad, but you could see the crack get bigger if you twisted the blade while holding the handle.

wasn't sure if damage that left the knife useable was covered. so, i send it to Buck to just ask "is it safe to use in this conditions or should it be repaired/replaced? you tell me"

i never got a phone call, email, or any correspondance. what i got was a BRAND NEW (in the box, with the registrations paperwork) KNIFE!!! they never said a word, just junked mine and sent a new one.

it gets better, i realize Buck outsources some of it's work and figured a $50 FB would be one of the pieces made in a sweat shop.... NOPE! it's actually a U.S. made knife. so - cheap, sturdy (worked even after i broke it), no question warranty, AND home grown. hoorah for Buck

Good deal on getting a new knife! I would be mad if they tossed my knife I sent them, without my permission though. Since you didn't ask them to do warranty work on it, but just if it was safe to use, in my opinion they f'd up by tossing the knife you sent them. For all they know that knife could have been a gift from a deceased friend/relative.

Every time I have had a knife replaced under warranty (3 different companies), they have always contacted me first before replacing to give me the choice of keeping the old knife instead. I wuold guess they think of that, too.

WARRANTY, RETURNS AND EXCHANGES
THE BUCK FOREVER WARRANTY

The Buck Knives Forever Warranty is pretty much what it says. A Buck Knife is built to last. But if for some reason, your Buck is defective due to materials or workmanship, you can return it to us for repair. No matter where you bought it.

We will repair your knife, including parts, labor and or replacement with a new knife at our discretion. Keep in mind, repair is not always possible or practical. We will replace your knife with the same or one that is comparable if your knife is no longer available. Please note if your knife has sentimental value when you send the knife to us.

I have purchased a bunch of knives over the years and I still say Buck is the best value I've ever came across. Super sharp blade at just the right price. I've borken a few other brands but so far I have never broken a Buck...knock on wood. :)

I do wish they would put liners in the lowend folders though. I seen a style I liked but once I noticed it didn't have a liner I passed on it.

Every fixed blade Buck I've owned has been perfect.

that's my bad, sorry. i didn't explain that, in the letter, i told them IF it DID have to be replaced, i was cool with it, that there was nothing special about the knife.

when i mentioned them not calling or emailing, i just meant that they never questioned HOW i damaged the knife. i actually left them a voicemail, asking if they had received it and what the prognosis was. that went unanswered, as well. it almost had time to bother me, then a brand new Nighthawk shows up in the P.O. Box :D

They are a first rate company in my mind. Also, they are working hard to bring all production back to the US. Of their new products this year I think only 1 is made overseas.

Great knife for the money from a US family owned business.

I think the Nighthawk has always been made in the USA. The ergonomics of the handles are a favorite of mine. Congrats on the replacement knife!

Sure they did. The f up was in tossing the knife. Not knowing it's value to the individual was a nice to know, not an f up.

Nope. The f-up would be on someone who sends something with sentimental value but fails to mention it. From Buck's Website:
Please note if your knife has sentimental value when you send the knife to us.

We will agree to disagree. I agree that the customer should note it. I also think that Buck should confirm before tossing it, if at all possible.

My point doesn't hold water anymore though, I was operating off of the following:

"wasn't sure if damage that left the knife useable was covered. so, i send it to Buck to just ask "is it safe to use in this conditions or should it be repaired/replaced? you tell me"

If they had tossed it w/o any further correspondence from you then they screwed up in my opinion. You asked for an opinion, not a repair. When they call to tell you there needs to be a repair, then they should have asked about the value of the knife to you.

The whole point is moot anyway, because you told them that there was no value. As you said, that wan't known when I first posted. Either way it is good to know that Buck just tosses them unless you specifically mention that it means something more than street value. Now I know if I ever need to send one in.
