Buck "Zipper"

Cliff, if your Zipper is 10 years old it is probably made of 425 "modified" stainles steel with a RC of around 57.

The current production models use 420HC at about the same hardness.

There are actually two versions of the Zipper in production. There is the standard version, model 691BK with a black kraton handle and brushed brass guard and buttcap. It retails for $79.00. It comes with a black cordura sheath.

There is also an upgraded version, model 191BR, with the same steel in the blade but with a laminated birchwood handle and polished brass guard and buttcap. Very nice. It retails for $93.00 and comes with a light brown leather sheath.

Hope this helps.

The rubber handle Zipper and a 6 inch chinese cleaver are my wife favorite poultry butchering knives. Mine is 425M steel and it keeps the edge well. I did a whole elk once back in 94 and the knife was still reasonably sharp.
