I am looking for a buck and want a fixed blade. I love the way the 119 looks especially with a cocobolo handle, but I was looking for something a little smaller so I found the woodsman but it appears to be to small and the pathfinder is in between but I'm not a fan of the blade shape. Does anyone know of any other knives. Is the 119 really that big? And is the woodsman really that small? I have a ka bar USMC how much larger does the ka bar look compared to the USMC.

Hi bigmack,

As David said take a look at the Vanguard, the Alpha Fixed blades are real nice and can still be found on the auction sites, The Ergohunters are good, and look at the Omnihunters.

For a knife with a 6" blade, to me, the 119 doesn't seem big. It's lightweight and well balanced. If you like the looks of the 100 Series, another possibility is the 118. It has a 4.5" blade and is available in cocobolo.

I have both the 119 an the full size KA-BAR 1219 (partially serrated Army ver). The 119 looks and feels much smaller than the KA-BAR. I think the actual blade on the 119 is almost a full inch less. The 119 simply looks and feels much smaller due to the weight / balance and the blade to handle ratio on the 119 feels more even. My $0.02... Get the 119. It's a classic and it will feel smaller than your KA-BAR.

If you want, I can try to post side by side pics but wont be able to do it till tomorrow.

Hello, My EDC Fixed blade is a Buck 919 with stag handle. They also make this knife with a rosewood and black G-10 handle. The blade is only a little over 3", but it is the thickest piece of steel I have ever seen on a Buck knife!!!

thankyou so much and if it wouldnt be to much trouble id love to see a side by side picture when ou can. and while in the sheath how low does the 119 hang?

Sure, I'll put up a couple of photos tomorrow side by side and with / without sheaths, but TAH's pic off the Web is pretty spot on. Both the handle and blade of the 119 are shorter so the overall package feels significantly smaller.
Frankly speaking, I love both and think they represent different things I like having in my modest collection.

Here's a few I just snapped and one from a camping trip last year
Sorry for the crappy quality.

It is a good decision to buy a 119. The special was
the first Buck knife I bought roundabout 20 Years
ago. You'll never have to regret about it.

I own both the Ka-Bar and Buck Special. Both are great knives but I really like the weight and balance of the 119 better. Good luck in your quest. tom.
