I recently went to a knife shop to add to my collection and when i chatted with the owner i am surprised that he said that BUCK and Gerber were considered so-so knives at best...I grew up knowing these names for quality knives....is this not the case?

Gerber dropped in many people's estimation after Fiskars took them over, but they do have many good models. Buck is still under the same family ownership, with the same quality and reliability they always had. Check out our Buck manufacturer's forum for a lot of information on what they've got.

Buck had seemed to have reached a point of stagnation several years back (in my opinion) but are real innovators once again. The past few years have seen a lot of impressive designs and flawless manufacturing. They've really made a lot of progress, and are once again a major company to watch!

Gerber I generally frown at, but I love their axes.

I would agree with that assessment. In the 80's-90's Buck wasn't a pack leader. Today they make a wide range of products, especially for hunters. But a lot of their urban designs are also nice.

Gerber was a leader in the 70's. They still seem today to be struggling after the Fiskars takeover.

I have bought Gerbers that had issues. I have never bought a Buck knife that had issues.
