Picked up a Buck 501 with impala scales and wood bolsters on clearance at Cabelas today. On the tang stamp is an arrow pointing down. Is this 420HC, S30V? Thanks.

Unstamped blades from Buck are 420HC and have been since 1994 (at least that's the old line of thought, some place that move slightly earlier).

I don't recall Buck has ever done a prem. steel 501. Of course that doesn't mean they haven't.

But arrow down in 2007 production and the scale is almost certainly jigged buffalo horn.

Is this the one you purchased?

I can't see the stamp on that too well, but it is the one I got. I almost got a 110 in the same design (wood, horn), and that was listed as 420HC too. I was hoping it was S30V or BG42 :D, but I am still happy I got it. Thank you.

I did look at the S30V 110's at Cabelas, and if I recall correctly, they were marked with the steel.

If your after a S30V 110 that AG from Cabelas is a great deal IMO.
But yes, AS A GENERAL RULE, I think you can be comfortable with the idea that Buck has stamped or etched all the premium steel blades. But this is not an absolute just most likely.

ARE YOU HAPPY NOW DECAF??

ugh... well .... this is very true now on any new knives however...
they did a 112 and did not stamp that they were bg42 on any of them
most of them got an photo etch bg42 on them ..
a few did not..
they were the first experiential CS 112 .. Joe can add to that..
Bucksway has one direct from Joe it is Not Marked
but per Joe it is one of the rare bg42 112's

there are 110 blades that are NOT marked as 110 or buck!!
i have seen them..
it was hinted once that they may be some thing other then standard steel ...

there are storys of 110 blades that are hand made of other steels
and were not tang stamped due to hardness
D2 comes to mind as does O2 but i discount them as wild buck dreaming
untell such time as a spark test is done that is..
but that ruins most the value of the blade!
Joe any comment on unstamped blades?

The BG-42 112's numbered around 100...You sent in a 112 and 35.00 and Buck put the blade in...Few EVER come up for sale.
