Perhaps some can help. I just received a collector's knife as a present. In the presentation of the gift, it states: "Early in the 1990s Buck began the manufacturing of a very selective folding knife made of gold-titanium. They strated with a run of 1,000 but it did not sell very well. They ended the run at 1,000. Accordingly, it has now become a collector's item.

Can someone tell me about this knife. 1) Is it indeed a rare item? 2) I love to use my knives, but this one has never been taken from the box. Is it taboo to remove from box and put it to use?

Thanks.

ah man, I was going to be all over this one and make Uncle Ken proud! :D

Man, I was working on a response and Cougar beat me to it.

Larry,

By your reply to "use it" I take it that the two Buck Cote 110's I have, new in the box, stickers still attached - one gray, one gold, both with the partial serrated blades, are not worth keeping in the case???? And here I thought I had something special...:D

I also seem to recall there was some discussion on the Buck Cote in regarding to sharpening them. I know to only sharpen the front side, allowing the coating to stay right at the edge in the back... but someone was having a problem. Do you recall hearing anything about it?

Hi Gypsy...You do have something special there. That's a nice knife. I too held back on using the knives" worth something"...but I learned from the people here that to use a knife is the best way to prove what it's "worth"...I recently picked up a new in the box with all the papers 531 Bucklock...It's now my edc...I love the knife and it is just perfect for my hands. Hell...I don't think I'll ever sell any of my knives...I might as well use 'em...LOL... Enjoy your knives the way you want to enjoy them. That's how they should be enjoyed.

DVV, you are the only one to decide to use it or collect it. May take a while but it will become collectable, or more collectable with time. Of course, in mint condition it is most collectable.
Dont think there is anything that hurts by taking it from the box and fondeling it some. Just wipe the fingerprints off before you put it away :)
