I picked up a Buck 119 the other day in a trade. Still in the box, unused. I have no clue what the grey finish on the blade is, other than a sticker that says "BUCKCOTE". On the box it says 119MMI grey w/sheath.
Does anyone have any information on this finish.... would be muchly appreciated.........ej

Use the seach function for some real detailed discussion on this. My short version is that the Buckcote was used to reinforce the back of the edge grind so the blade stays sharper longer. Did you notice the single bevel on the edge?? the Buckcote comes down on the back side to form a hard backing.
At first they used Titanium nitride and changed to zirconium nitride as coatings. It was a good idea, toobad it didnt stay popular. You've got a good knife there. Take care, guy

The basic idea with these is to only sharpen the uncoated side of the edge, in order to maintain the super-hard coating as the main cutting edge. Not sure how well that actually works out, I bet it's great on softer materials that can't abrade or micro-chip the coating at the edge.

I have a 110 with the gold coating Buckcote and was thinking of getting another to try as an EDC. Maybe a 110 or some other model.

Was Buckcote an option for all the models of the day or just select ones?

Has anyone really used one for any length of time to post an opinion here?

Hello Buckaholic,
As far as I know they were not offered on ALL models of the day(s)
They were made for several years in the late 90's early 2000's.
In going through my Buck Catalogs I have seen them in Vanguards, Zippers,119 Specials, 110's, Protege. I am sure there are a few I am missing and they maybe made some for special produtions... But I've never seen it on fillets, or 103 skinners, Alphas, 102 woodsman etc...

As far as use... I never liked just sharpening the one side on a stone...
Didnt use it much! The ones I did/do have the cutting edge does seem to be alittle more fragile than the standard edge on a Buck. They are sharper though!!! SCARY sharp!!!
Hope this helps a little...
Jim

Heres a pair of harder to find ones with different colors!

Thanks Jim...
I really like that set of Vanguard/Zipper. Especially the non-gut one (Vanguard).

What you said about Buckcote is helpful. I do recall reading somewhere that the blades seem more fragile (brittle?).

I'm thnking of looking for one to test as an EDC. I use my knives for normal stuff (no bolt cutting or wires) so hopefully the fragile blade situation won't be an issue.

Thanks again...

I used mine for normal stuff too. I wouldn't really say they were fragile,
Just if you do use it sometimes the coating would chip or break off in little spots. I guessed it was from the angle of the grind? For hunting they were great! Stayed sharp longer than any knife I own. Now the buck cotes I have left are just to look at and post pics of :D! Try one out! They are quite valuable to collectors though!!! Might I suggest buying a Protege Buckcote to start with!? The 110's are hard to find!!!!
Thank you Goose!!!! Enjoy the rest of the weekend!!!!
