Stopped at the hardware store yesterday for something else and there in the display case, staring at me like a puppy was a slick little Bucklite 482. It reminded me a bit of my first Buck, a Ranger, which I carried (and wore out a few pockets) until I had sharpened the blade down to a nub. So, naturally enough, it followed me home. My usual EDCs these days are either a BassPro 110 or a BM Mini-Rukus, both of which are great knives – but they’re heavy. I wanted something I could stick in a pocket and forget I even had it until I needed it. Handle is glass-filled nylon, tougher than nails, light, corrosion resistant to practically everything, and the blade is Buck’s tried-and-true 420HC. It was already sharp (Buck’s Edge 2X edge profile really works) but five minutes on the DMTs took it to a hair-popping edge. Its spring is fairly stiff -- too stiff to easily use the thumb studs -- but it's already starting to smooth out (with a drop of BreakFree). It's also small enough with a 3" blade not to frighten the sheeple, and it would be a good blade to carry when traveling. I’m not giving up my 110 or Mini-Rukus by any means – I’d love to see Buck produce a Lite model with a S30V or CPM-154 blade – but the 482 has found its way into my pocket.
