Hi all. I am new to this forum, so I would appreciate all the help you can give. I have wanted a Buckmaster 184 since I first saw it about 8 years ago. I finally purchased one from ebay. It is brand-new in box, never used, and the really cool thing is that this knife actually was issued to a Navy SEAL! Anyway, I've read some of the posts here about it, and am worried that I may have made a poor choice. I want the knife mainly because it looks so cool, but I also go backpacking and have been needing/wanting a nice knife. I am not some crazy outdoor extremist, but I do care lots about quality, and want a good, reliable knife. I would like to know what you all think about it - i.e; quality, functionality, etc. Let me know!!! P.S. - it hasn't arrived yet!

Thanks!
Strati

If you're worried about the quality, rest easy. It's a Buck!

As far as the functionality and reliability are concerned, that depends on what you want to do with the knife.

It is a big, heavy tool that can take a lot of punishment and will stand up to hard use. Most campers and hikers don't usually need that much but some think that it's better to be overbuilt than inadequate and this knife is certainly overbuilt.

If you need to chop boughs to make a shelter or kindling for a fire, it will do the job nicely. It's a survival tool more than anything else and is well suited to the task.

Keep it sharp because it can be hard to sharpen and, if you let it get dull, you will have a lot of work ahead to get the edge back. It is much easier to maintain the edge than restore it.

It's a good tool but, in the long run, you are the only one who can determine if it will meet your needs.

drjones,

If you are unhappy with your Buckmaster, let
me know. I'll consider buying it from you.

Bash - Sorry, buddy. The knife came the other day, and I LOVE it! It is way too cool!!! I will not be parting with this thing! Look on ebay though, there are always several on auction.

Thanks!

Hey Bash - I know of someone who is looking to sell his buck 184. He is an ex-SEAL, and the knife is AWESOME! It is brand-new in box, never used, and has some cool SEAL engravings on it. His email is willyseal@aol.com

Good luck,

Strati

Well, I have a Buckmaster and have had it for some time now and I can't really find a nich for it in my knife collection. It seems the the blade a too short to be a good "survival" knife. I prefer a 9" blade. So if anyone would like to have this one then e-mail me and make an offer. It has not been used but the bluing is worn off of the forward serrated part where I had to sharpen it more to my liking.
Oh, and I also have a M9 by Buck that I would consider selling too. The new ones are made by Ontario instead of Buck.

muzzleup, actually the new ones are made by Lancay. Ontario made some of the older M7 bayonets.

E-mail me with the condition of your M9, or a photo, and your price.

Thanks -- Bruce Woodbury

muzzleup is right about a new one made by Ontario. There is also a Chinese made copy out now for about $80. The latest issue M9 to the troops is made by Lancay, but I still like the Buck model best.

Thanks, muzzleup!

Bruce

Actually, LanCay and Ontario are both producing M9s on multiple small contracts for the Army. About half are being made by LanCay, half by Ontario. Ontario contracted to produce 25,000 in July 1999 and an additional 9,100 in August 1999. The Ontario version is identical to late LanCays with the exception of the scabbard/grip being made with a slightly lighter green plastic.

I just checked eBay, and sure enough, he's got it up for auction.
