I bought a Buckmaster 184 years ago when I was just a kid. A mall near my house used to have a specialty knife shop inside and I could not resist buying one of these knives even though the knife shop charged through the nose for their knives. I was young and stupid and just wanted the knife so I paid what they were asking. Anyway, I am pretty sure that it is a later generation Buckmaster. The polymer sheath is stamped BUCK at the bottom and the knife has BUCKMASTER in the blood groove on the right side of the blade and 184 U.S.PAT. 4622707 in the blood groove on the left side of the blade.

My question is this, can anyone tell me what years this model was manufactured? Also, there are no other stampings other than the ones described. Does all this sound correct for a genuine late generation BUCKMASTER knife?

Yeah, it looks exactly like the ones that have BUCKMASTER in the blood groove, near the bottom of the page.

Yes, that is a later generation model. The Buckmaster was introduced late in 1984 and intitially had no patent. Fairly early in production they decided to patent it. The first several hundred examples from 1985 had "Pat. Pending" on the opposite ricasso, while later examples has "Pat. Pending" under the "Buck" mark. There were also some early variations in the compass. The patent began appear in the fuller in 1987. They were produced until 1997 with over 100,000 units made in total. A great knife with an interesting history!
