I picked up a 184 Buckmaster today made between June-September 1985. It is missing the compass and the blade is kind of scratched up on one side but otherwise it is pretty complete and in nice condition.

The survival kit is partly intact and has the paper "#28-702 survival pack for large hollow handle survival knives" that tells what is supposed to be in the kit, but it is very crinkled and when I tried to smooth it out, it tore. I can't read the entire list and was wondering if someone knew what was on the list.

Don't worry, I'll post pictures :)

I've seen that knife before. I was always curious what the spikes were for. Does anyone know?

Thanks,

M

What are the two spikes in the cross guard for?

Makes this knife look painfull to use.

The spikes are not installed for normal use.

For most of the things you would do with this knife, the spikes have no role and don't need to be there.

When pressing the knife into service as an emergency grapple (the kind of hook used to anchor a rope for climbing a wall or tree), the spikes are installed -- they are threaded and screw into the guard.

Having survived the grappling & climbing experience, you would remove the spikes and carry on using the knife as, you know, a knife. Or something.

Unfortunately I don't have a list of what's supposed to be in the knife's survival kit.

There is a web site dedicated to the 184 (see here) but I didn't see the list there, either.

I'll look around a bit.

The Buckmaster is on my Wish List! Yours is the perfect kind; in great shape, but not so pristine that you don't want to put it to use. Thanks for the pics!

You're welcome Bowie. I've wanted one for a long time and while I'd rather have one new in the box with everything you are right, this one I can actually use.

OK, this thread put me over the top. I finally bought a 184. I hope mine is as nice as the one in these pics. It definately looks like a "user," but hopefully not abused.

Buck Knives never had a "survival Kit" offering.. Yours is nice! THIS BuckMaster is a Variation(#3)(made middle of July 1985 till Sept 1985) estimated 13,008 bead blasted ones made. This is the same stamping that was on the 2500 BuckMaster's delivered to the US Navy SEALs June 20th 1985..
The anchors"spikes" had three uses. First it was an anchor and a rope was tied to the lanyard loop. The reason for the anchors was a Navy SEAL Commander wanted a way to tie down the zodiac raft or gear while on a mission. These anchors can hold 275 lbs. Another use was a grappling hook(with knife in Sheath) as a last ditch if the SEAL's were stuck in a tree. Third was to protect your knuckles (taking the rear anchor out) again in a last ditch effort to use the knife to fight with . THIS knife was never designed for a fighting knife and i read many documents stating that fact. Again the third option was a last ditch resort.. This knife of yours is way cool... Any questions please ask and I will do my best to answer them fast.. Rich

Interesting stuff. If it didn't come with a survival kit, then what was in my knife? :) The title of the sheet, "#28-702 survival pack for large hollow handle survival knives", makes it seem like it was made for the knife.

I have a 184 with a (3) line stamp BUCK, 184, USA. It was purchased at a show and I don't have a box or any paperwork.

It has a compass in the pommel and it came with (1) of the fabric pouches with BUCK embroidered at an angle containing:

the spikes in a sort of mesh sleeve

a Silva compass with a red nylon cord

a plastic straw with two needles inside

a plastic bag with some fishing line, a bunch of fish hooks and some lead weights

a yellow plastic sleeve filled with wooden matches with red tops (not strike anywhere matches)

I didn't get the compass with mine :( and they are expensive on eBay so I probably won't get one either. My kit has the needles, hooks, weights and matches. No straw or sleeve.

I'll try and iron or somehow flatten the list and post it.

ChadHahn .. to answer your next question! That title says it all "#28-702 survival pack for large hollow handle survival knives" is a pack made for a hollow handle knife like the BuckMaster, Rambo, parker etc for example. If BUCK Knives made it it would say "#28-702 survival pack for BuckMaster " or something like that.. Hope this helps.
