Well after so much posted about them, I took the plunge today and bought one of the new chinese made Buck slipjoints. I got the 379 SOLO with birch scales.

OK, I know I'm likely to get flamed for this, but out of the box, my first impressions are very positive. The fit and finish is top grade, the birch scales are rather nice looking to me. The blade is centered and razor sharp, the backspring is nice and strong. All and all, it seems quite a bit better than my Schrade Old-Timer I bought a few months ago.

I'm gonna carry and use it for a few weeks and see how it holds up, but so far I think it's a great knife, no matter where it was made.

Anyone that knows Buck knives has got to know that Buck wouldn't put their name on it unless it was a decent product, enough said.

Everyone has their own opinion on life & things in general. No reason to flame them. Glad you like your knife. I personally won't buy China made knives. (Buck or otherwise) Fortunately, there's still plenty of quality, affordable USA ones to choose from. (Buck or otherwise)

The logic expressed throughout this thread is a pretty good representation of how carefully we have approached bringing in product from offshore.

I do not know what you guys all talk about around christmas or thanksgiving dinner but this comes up in our house...my father had many reservations about importing product, and we have found that in our different marketplaces some folks are more offended then others. For that reason our tactical and our hunting lines remain almost all USA made.

We are still waiting to see how our relocation to Idaho out of Southern California will impact our global competitiveness...

Your 379 has 440C steel and will rockwell over 57RC to 58RC.

We have had to do some training as far as edging and heat treat goes and feel comfortable to have our name on these products.

Thanks for the info' CJ, you got ot admit folks it's pretty cool to get to "talk" back and forth with the actual company family.

p.s. Mr. Buck, I used my new 379 to cut cigars over the weekend, which I have found to be a real test of a knifes edge to cleanly cut a 1" diameter hand rolled cigar. It sliced through several without blinking, and I did quite a bit of whittling for fun on some maple sticks, and the factory edge is still shaving!

Seems to me ya'll got some winners withthis line.

I'm already eyeing the midsized Stockman.

Well, Mr. Buck, since you asked...

Here's my perspective about foreign-made things. It personally doesn't bother me. I prefer American from an American company, but as long as there are still American Bucks, I'm still buying.

Now, the opposite perspective, from my grandfather. Grandpa's pretty tough on those sorts of things, as he's old enough to remember when Japan=crap and German=oppressive. He still refers to my dad's Dodge van as "That car made overseas". I don't want to know what he would think of my BMW.

Chinese knives will fly with many people as they are cheaper. However, I personally would be wary of trying to sell Chinese in the South, particularly Applachia. You can try, but make sure the US ones are VERY clearly marked.

Not wanting to offend anyone , I treat all people equally as long I get it in return.
I notice a glaring difference in knives made in China and those made by some American companies in Taiwan , the ones from Taiwan are usually of good quality , it is the swap mall junk that is made in China or Pakistan I steer clear of.
On the other hand , I work in the computer industry and nearly everything is made in China , most of it is pretty reliable. hmm...
