The 896 RapidFire, Buck's second automatic, was designed for everyday carry. It features a dual action, removable thumb stud that offers the user the choice between a slow opening, liner lock engagement or a rapid fire automatic opening. The blade springs open with a slide of the button, readying the S30V steel blade for quick action at a moments notice. The aluminum handle has an ergonomic shape, liner lock mechanism, and titanium pocket clip set up for tip-up, right-hand carry. This is the everyday carry Automatic for the masses, made right here in the USA.

I am lucky living in Oregon in that I can own em AND carry em out in the open but not concealed.

Just a guess but these Buck automatics could blow thru our hands like a mighty wind and be gone baby gone before you know it. I am tickled to see the coming color variations to the 898. Maybe that means they will stay around a bit longer. The creative actuation switch on this new 896 looks interesting to my sore eyes. If it doesn't spring open in pocket maybe it will create some action. Many won't carry an auto without a lock. And then many won't own one with a lock...

The Buck line of Autos could be an easy one to collect them all perhaps as you don't have to reach back into the distant past in order to get started.

It is definitely interesting, but I didn't have good luck with the one dual-action I owned.

I'd like to see a photo of the other side of this knife. The titanium pocket clip side. Since the clip is oriented for tip up carry it must be positioned opposite the pivot. I wonder if the pocket clip is coated, polished or anodized? I could anodize it easily with some 9V batteries, wires, a small paint brush with a metal ferrule and some Diet Pepsi if it was uncoated. Highly polished would yield better looking results.

I've read that this knife might be available before 2016 has run out of steam.

GIRLYmann you made me laugh right out loud. Yes you did.

Carried in a sheath, no problem. ;)

Carried in a front pocket, possible self-administered vasectomy.

Carried in a rear pocket, possible dis-assed ter. :D

I am so clumsy that I could open a safe were I to pocket carry it! I could do it. Yes I could. Uh huh.

I was even able to open, in my right front jean's pocket, a rather large folder with an Emerson Wave feature. I was trying to quickly unhook the knife from the rim of my pocket and drop it into the pocket. Luckily it only penetrated the bottom of the pocket and nothing else. Very lucky. Never carried it again after that.

GIRLYmann you made me laugh right out loud..

Well, you're a riot too!
We just might have to urgently request buck knives
To come up with a novel auto locking belly button model
Where in a button knife would get firmly locked
the moment one suddenly rolls on the floor
with uncontrollable fits of laughter.
Have a nice day!

I love the knife and by the description does the blade open by the button or do you need to use the stud on the blade?ill definitely buy one if its by the button especially since its usa made.

A hearty welcome to the Buck Forum and to BladeForums lazer50. Have a terrific time here.

You can use either method to open the new 896 Rapid Fire. It opens automatically when you hit the button. It also opens using the blade thumb stud. The best of both worlds!

Automatics are hard for me to resist. OK I admit it and there it is. I like gadgets with a purpose. A small machine that is spring loaded when you close the blade. What fun. It is on my shopping list.

Sorry for the necropost, but I was curious if anyone every tried one of these out. I had totally forgotten about it because no one ever talks about them.

I have one. I had to send it back to Buck because the blade was rubbing and grinding. After it came back, it works very well on both manual and auto.

I like it with one exception. I don’t care for the slider button. I would prefer a push button release. It is more difficult for me to activate with my left hand and I am left handed. It is easy to open manually.

It is a very well made knife and it fires really hard. It feels very good in my hand and it is different. I like different! Plus, I think that it is a good looking knife.

It is a looker for sure. I thought more people would have picked one of these up if for no other reason than collector stock.

Not much out on this, but the more I look at it the more I like it. Found a few websites with more that just the standard side shot pic and man this thing looks nice. Looks like that thumb-plate thingy is removable too. I am surprised it is not more popular.

I bought 1 at the last factory sale-it is badazz---fast fast solid and with authority-hang on to it when deploying blade...
