Just bought my second Buck knife, little 444 liteweight lockback. It states its blad is made out of 420 HC stainless. What is that exactly?
I remember the old charts that listed 420 stainless as having a high tensile strength, but somewhat soft (if I remember right). Is this some sort of specialty 420 that is harder? How does this compare to
440A and 440C with which I'm familiar.
Thanks.

Greetings, the 444 is a very nice light weight knife. The blade is the same as the 501 Squire. 420hc is a far cry from regular 420. The HC indicates a 'special' mixture with more carbon and I believe, chromium than standard 420. What makes the steel work well in my opinion is Bucks heat treating. The composition of the steel can be found on Bucks site in the T&I FAQS area I believe.
hope this helps,
guy
