Just curious if anyone has actually compared Buck's 440A, 425M, 420HC and 440C vs. one another. I'm wondering because I have two 1995 650C Nighthawks and l really like them. But I'm trying to really put shaving sharp edge on this 425M. I have tried researching 425M as best I can but very little info on it. Is it a Crucible steel? Is it a fine grain steel? Is it a tough steel? Tougher than 420HC with Buck's heat treatment? Does anyone have experience with 425M or prefer it to 420HC or 440C in fixed blades? All the usual questions. Thanks for any additional information you all could share.

Buck changed from using 440C to using 425M. They changed from 425M to 420HC for improved producibility. They wanted to fine blanc the blades. 420HC is better for that.

David Martin (R.I.P.) has on cutting up chickens in his old farm thread in the Buck forum on all those steels. he based it on being able to do how may chicken before resharpening was necessary. he also tested Bucks s90v steel in his chicken work he did on his farm. it's a big thread with a lot of posts so you'll have to hunt around for the info but it's there.

Bucks edge 2000 angles didn't start til around 1999 era. prior to that they're bevels were very wide and very hard to get a good edge without reprofiling. you can send it into Buck and ask for them to sharpen it to the steeper and far better edge 2000 setup or reprofile yourself and do the work.

I have all those steels in Buck knives. I dont find Bucks 425m to feel a lot different than Bucks 420hc in my use.

I was just looking at David M's farm life thread. 425m processed 5 chickens before needing to be touched up.

David M. also did a bear grass cutting test on some steels. I didn't hunt hard enough to see 425m..I found the s30v pretty easily though. worth searching through that thread for David M's cutting results he posted randomly.....
