I know that a D2 118 was made in the past. Was any other knives produced by Buck in D2?

I would image some of you have some good experiance with the D2 118. I would be interested in any comments about edge holding, difficulty of sharpening, etc.

David Martin, I'd be particularily interested in what you think about the D2 118.

Thanks Guys. g

bucksway has a D2 hew uses fishing and loves it!
heard rummer of D2 110 blades that were not marked buck
never seen any though..
never see the tooth fairy either but the money was always there
hummm ...
now i thiink more on it ..
i have heard of 110's with no tang stamps several times...
rummer was they were ordered by cia for covert use in nam..
pure fiction i believe Joe would say...

I've heard the D2 rumors like Dave but the only one I've seen is the 118 . I held a 118 w/ stag and polished D2 blade one day in one of my honey hole knife stores . I think I4Bucks was with me that day . It looked real handsome but we both passed as he wanted 180$ for it . D2 is a tool steel, large grain but the vanadium helps to refine this some and holds a good edge espically w/ Bucks heat treating . The plainer blades w/ D2 steel have a higher chromium content and are stainless but I've not heard many users of this steel complain about a rusting problem (Its so close). D2 takes a lousy polish, looking orange in color (I've not polished them just been in the shop when other makers did it). Plus its known to have inclusions like 425M and mirror polishing brings its out . Hence, few ever mirror polish this steel . But it cuts very well . DM

I managed up on a couple of the 118 D2 Stags. They are purty, but just laying over there in their boxes.

Then you guys talked about the 118 D2 Build outs and two of those are in my back pack, impatiently waiting to be used, hopefully here in the next couple of weeks or so. We still have about 4 weeks to gather venison.

One of the BO's has been lightly used by the niece's boyfriend, as I couldn't stand seeing him hack and saw at his deer meat that they were processing, so I laid one of the 118D2's on the table and told him it is sharp.

He was using some benchmade brand folder with a half serrated blade. Or trying to....

He only cut himself once. And he is a medic...

He raved about the 118 and I let him use a freshly sharpened 110 and he raved about that as well. Said he will have one each the next time he gets to come. Hated to burst his bubble about the 118....

I hope to have some new pics and do a wrap of our hunting season here in a few weeks.

Whew ! i am glad you had heard the rummers also!
clint loves his D2 !
and ThankS for the data on D2 i did not know it would look orange in color!!!
i have a nice 500$ 13 inch dewalt plainer and blades are hi $$ but i seen what punishment they take.. impressive...and even dull on the wood
i still nicked my self on the old ones removing them!
and i am Extreamly glad some one else knows of the
425M inclussions!! i had one that was MP and some stuff
showed after a few years but it worked real well for working blade!!
glad you can keep sharp on things now! ;):D;):D

I've seen no Bucks with D2 blades. But, I've not seen any orange D2 either. The D2 on my Queens does not take a true mirror finish, but it isn't orange. D2 is way more corrosion resistant than carbon steel, but not as corrosion resistant as a true stainless. I've got a couple of dark patina spots on some of my D2 blades. None on the stainless blades that are treated the same way.

I agree with the rest. Hard to get a razor edge on it (I've never managed it, but some of the fellas who stop with diamond dust say they can do it), but it holds the edge that you do get for a LONG time.

I don't know how many Buck knives there are out there in D2, but when the custom shop was origanly open, that was a option steel for a knife. According to the old custom catalogs that I have been checking out to see what I had missed out on back then. HL

Thanks Larry. Please let us know how that D2 118 works out for you.
I think you are the only one of us that got those.
