I ordered a Damascus Buck and was curious as to what kind of steel Buck uses...so I called em. I just got a message back from Dave R. saying that it was made of 2 carbon steels, 1095 and 1018. he didn't say what % of each. But, I figured some of you might be curious also. Does anybody Know the percentages? John

Soory to bump this thread but I didnt want to make a new one when there was already a thread related to my topic.

Just wondering how good the Buck Damascus is? I have a Custom already ordered (in BG-42) but for a future knife im considering getting one in damascus. I plan to use it (keep it in my back pack), so i was wondering if it is easy to sharpen? edge retention? easy to take care of?

Just so ya know, I've no experience with damascus...

Thanks in advance for any info :D

I have since gotten my Damascus buck and while it is a great looking blade, and gets really sharp, I would not buy it again for a user. Example: I saw a screw in my tire and used the knife to investigate the depth/leaking...etc. The tip broke right away...hardly any pressure at all, and when it broke, the metal kind of peeled, like the layers were seperating, it was a very small break off of the tip, but it gave way rather easily. I sharpened out the tip and it is fine....I just don't trust it anymore as a real user.....anyway, it is a beautiful metal and I love the knife, it will just be collector piece from now on. John

datsgor, just gone done reading a lot of back posts about Buck damascus. Only came across two reports that might be considered negative--yours and another one about the finishing on one particular blade. Sorry to hear about the tip break though. How much of the tip did you lose?

Since the 110 was designed for cutting and not "probing" it's no wonder the tip broke off!

Use your Buck knife for what it was made for and it will last you a lifetime.

Take care,

Warhawk

Very little tip was lost....more of a flaking than a break off. No blanket statement about all Damascus, just my knife only. Like I said, no evidence remains and I will not use this knife for heavy duty use in the future....I have some other knives that can handle that. peace, John
