Has anyone out there had a chance to try out Buck's new edge grind? They changed the angle of the bevel on the edge and have come up with some really sharp knives. The last batch of Nighthawks I received had this grind and I was really impressed. So were the customers who have checked it out. In fact, I have to order more Nighthawks because I sold out of the latest ones. If you haven't had a chance to check this out, I recommend it. You'll be impressed too.

Jeff, You can tell the folks at the plant "good job" on this one.

Jeff -- I read about Edge 2000 in the June issue of Blade. How can we tell if a knife has undergone your Edge 2000? Is there any marking?

David, the edge 2000 is very distinctive as
there is much more "relief" evident. In simpler terms, the edge is wider and thinner
than that found on previous Bucks. It is
also NOTICIBLY sharper. I have not used
any of the edge 2000 knives I own so I cannot
tell you how it holds up but Buck's tests
were very encouraging.

When I asked the same question a month ago, here is the answer I got from CJ Buck:

"There are two easy ways to tell if the new edging process has been used on the knife you are looking at.
The first is to look at the "date code". This is a mark that will appear next to the model number in the blade stamp. The 1999 blade stamp is like a capital "C" with 3 straight lines instead of a curve. Like a capital E without the middle line.

The second way is to look at the width of the ground bevel of the edge. We have cut in half our included angle on the edge. This gives a much wider blade grind. It will be noticeable compared to a non-edge 2000 grind.

Included angle is when you hold your knife edge down and draw a line right down the center of the blade. You then take the angle of that line in relation to the angle of the edge grind. An unedged knife has an included angle of 180 degrees.

You know the real key though, the edgers are so proud of these edges they ensure nothing goes past them that is not scarry sharp."

Thaks Jeff for posting the CJ quote.
These are the esiest ways to tell. The height of the edge line will be noticable. Previously and w/ some competitors, you can barely even tell it has an edge line at all. And of course they are sharp... I've cut myself more times with ATS and BG blades since we went to EDGE 20000(tm)then all the years here combined. I have a Master Series 110 w/o EDGE 2000 and one with EDGE 2000 and there is a noticable difference. I'll post some charts of the Catra tests so you can see the difference. Initial sharpness is 30-50% better.

I have been testing out my 403 for about a month or so now, it has the new edge geometry and it really sharpens up very well. I have put this knife through a fair amount of use in the short time I've had it and when it loses it's edge, it comes back with just a minute on my Sharpmaker. I noticed the pronounced grind line when I first got it, but was not "sold", until I resharpened the first time or two. I have been very pleasently surprised with this new edge angle

I spent some time with a friend's Nighthawk, and then started going through the chore of re-sharpening it. I'd tell you what I thought of that, but the Bladeforums censoring software would change it all to "*****".

A real working edge on the Nighthawks would go a long way towards making this a much much better knife. Glad to see Buck is on top of this, I'll have to find a new Nighthawk to test out.

I was walking a tour through the plant a couple of weeks ago and Nighthawks were being sharpened. I had two bald patches on my arm to show for testing two knives from a batch (they were not convinced after just one)

The angles are important for edge retention and reedging but I still think there is a pride momentum at work with the edgers and they are more focused then ever.

CJ, Joe, Jeff:

I just took delivery of a Chuck Buck Signature Series Model 400 S/N 021 which has the Edge2000. This will not be a using knife for me, rather a collectible, but an inspection did reveal the improved edge geometry.... I'm favorably impressed!
