Has anyone ever heard of a program such as this? Following are images of a Buck 121 posted for sale elsewhere. It is claimed to be a presentation knife to Edwin L Mathews, a MLB player 1952 to 1968 and Hall of Fame inductee 1978. Couldn't personally care about the engraved name on the knife but of more interest is the etching on the backside. "BUCKS FOR BOYS 1977". Would love to know more about that program. I find it interesting that the name is engraved while the program name on the other side is printed/etched (?) I do not know what provenance the seller has that the engraving refers to the ball player. In 1977 he would have been 46 years old, not exactly a 'boy'. The knife is of the correct vintage to 1977. Any comments or thoughts? /Roger

I don't know for sure, but it might be possible Mr. Mathews bought the knife through the Bucks For Boys program, and Buck engraved his name on it?

I don't remember Mr. Mathews all that well, he started playing before my mum made the "oops" that became me, and I was 13 when he retired. At that age I was not paying much attention to any professional sport.
But I think he was a big supporter of youth programs. (I could be wrong, of course.) I would not be surprised if he was the original owner.

Edddie was one of my childhood heroes.......a team mate of the great Hank Aaron and one of the best third basemen in history and could hit with power.
This "Bucks for Boys" does not ring a bell with me, though.

I could not find anything using my googlefu, but I only went a few pages in.

You should PM DeSotoSky and ask where he saw it and maybe you could purchase it or maybe he wants it for himself??

It's an old problem......I wouldn't want it without good provenance and if it has good provenance it will probably cost more than I want to pay.
:D

I have a rule..... I never post about something I want until AFTER I own it.....Ha Ha.
No sense stirring up the competition. It's on an auction site..... fair game to anyone...
A bit pricy, about triple what a plain jane would go for. I'm just intrigued about the 'Bucks for Boys' angle.

Don Henley's song, The Boys of Summer, has the following lines: I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
After the boys of summer have gone
I think this is an allusion to the baseball season. Maybe "Bucks for the Boys of Summer", but it wouldn't fit on the blade.

Logical, Tiguy.......but it's a reach. :)

The thing is--if it were a presentation to pro athletes I think the lettering would be better. This looks cheap.
Then there's......why a very plain-jane 121?
Mystery still.

I dropped an email query to Joe Houser. Auto reply he's out of the office for a few days.
