Two coworkers of mine will be buying knives thanks to my persistent influence. One, who is a hiker, wanted a good knife to carry in his pack. Based on his criteria I suggested the Buck Special, and he was so pleased with the picture I printed from the Web that I suspect he'll be buying one from a local store in the next day or so.

The second coworker, a lady who works in our graphics department, saw the bright green Blackie Collins Buddy System I've been wearing around my neck. "Do they come in purple? Or pink?" she asked. She handed me the cash and I placed an order through Smoky Mountain Knife Works for a pink Buddy System (and another Arclite for myself).

The public doesn't understand knives, but there's hope. Let's convert them. Let's convert them all. :)

Well done Razor. Your hiker friend might also like the V-nox Rucksack.
I've converted a few at work myself.

Paul

Good for you Razor. The more people we can get into the world of knives the fewer that will fear them. :)

I find that most of my converts have been youngsters that I have taught to love and respect knives. That way you have them for life.;)

Amen, Reverend Razor! :) Especially after 9/11 we need to preach the positive use of knives....knives as tools to sustain life; achieve something.

RH -- yes, it's definitely worth the $10.00 US that Smoky charges for them. The bolt lock is secure, and the spring is powerful enough that when you release it the sheath flies away from the blade. (This might diminish over time, but the lock is easily released with one hand.) The plastic sheath and handle are comfortable against my skin, since I usually wear the knife under my shirt. It was extremely sharp out of the box, too. (I can't speak to edge-holding or ease of resharpening, however, because I haven't actually used it enough to dull it significantly yet.)

If I have one complaint it's that the knife sometimes flips over under my shirt, meaning that the bolt release is sometimes on the "wrong" side when I go to get at the knife.

Razor, nice going, purple or pink huh,.....hmmmmmmm,what the heck, better than none at all.;)

I'm not familiar with the Buck knife. Is it like the little AG Russell neck knife? The one with the Blackie Collins plastic sheath with the push button release? AG also has a couple of larger versions for cleaning trout and deer hunting. Great knives. I especially dig the little necker which I haven't seen in his catalog for a while.

Good job on your recruitment to the blade cult.:D I'm working on my buddy at the bakery and all the potter ladies at the art center. They really like my little ceramic letter opener knives but are unsure when I whip out big folders. Predictable I guess. So I educate them about materials and design, purpose of the blades etc.

The Buck Special is a large fixed blade that's been around for years. (I read once that it was among the blades favored by troops in Vietnam. Whether or not that's true, the knife did exist then.) The standard Special has a phenolic handle, while a wood handle with brass accents can also be had:

And for those that haven't seen one, here's a Buddy System, in basic black rather than lime green (or hot pink):
