Buck's New TravelMate Kit

Here is one of the new Buck items for 2012. I picked it up at the Factory Sale today these will not be released till 2012.
What do you think of it?

Better yet, tell us what you think of it? Construction quality? Versatility? Practicality? I spotted it as just added to Web Specials for $50 (meeting free shipping criteria):

What was price today at the Factory Store? I'm interested in one for my travel trailer to be used with those "Bucklite III folding steak knives" I just received! :D

Edit:
I'm still interested in your feedback, but decided to get one while available. I think this will be a popular holiday gift item on the travel trailer forum I frequent. If you want one too - don't wait too long!

Neat. Think I would have liked it more with a Paklite knife in it, would be much more useful in my mind. Not sure if I'm into it for $50 as it is.

Made in USA which is nice.

Odd, that the first appearance is on the Web Special page. Makes me think it won't be around long.

To bad it didn't come with a 102 or 105 for that price... It's different that's for sure...

The specs say it's 410HC steel, something new for Buck if it's true.

"Allegheny Ludlum Type 410HC is a hardenable straight-chromium stainless steel which combines superior wear resistance of high carbon alloys with the excellent corrosion resistance of chromium stainless steels. Oil quenching this alloy from temperatures between 1800°F and 1950°F produces the high strength and/or wear resistance as well as corrosion resistance.

A major use for this grade of heat treatable stainless steels is in cutlery. When blanking cutlery parts from annealed raw material stock, Type 410HC will usually exhibit hardness, yield strength, and tensile strength that are low enough for fine blanking purposes. Type 410HC is a high carbon version of Type 410. When sufficient amounts of carbon are added to straight-chromium stainless steel, the alloy then has the capability to transform its microstructure through proper heat treatment (hardening) into one that will possess optimum strength , hardness, edge retention, and wear resistance.

Information provided by Allegheny Ludlum Corporation."

I'm not that big of a culinary guy ( even though I love to eat ) however even I find this cool. IMO buck is doing a stellar job at broadening their cutlery horizens with stuff like this.

I wonder how durable the hinge and lock mechanism are. It looks like it could be a useful thing to throw in a pack.

I agree I think a different knife would make it work better for me.

If I remember correctly, last year they put this spreader in some kind of special. I wonder if they made a whole bunch of them and this kit is a way to market the remainder in a creative way. It's still an interesting combo and could be useful in some circumstances.

Official release of this product is Jan 2012. It will be a catalog item. We just wanted to get some out for Christmas. It looks like our evil plan is working :D

My ordered TravelMate arrived this evening, so here's my first "hands on" impressions. For me, Buck's included "941 Spreader" would be my choice for intended food prep usage rather than a conventional knife. The handle has a mottled, faux burl-like handle material (unsure what it actually is) and is very nicely finished. I also like the storage sheath for intended travel & picnic use. I am confused what to do with the "multi-functional stainless steel fork with an integrated bottle opener, can opener, screwdriver and grill scraper for all your food prep needs" since it doesn't feature a handle for leverage and protection on the sharp end while held in hand. I thought perhaps it integrated with the spreader knife or sheath in some way, but nope. So, its quality "kit" at not much more cost than the 941 Spreader alone at $137 retail, but unsure that "It's a kitchen on the go!".
