Many of the Buck collectors on the forum score their treasures on the Bay.Thankfully,several fakes and knock offs have been brought to light lately!What other things should the novice Buck collector watch out for when Buck fishing on the Bay.I hope this topic is OK to discuss on the forum,if not let me know and I'll close it.:eek:

Bad Feedback.... :thumbdn::thumbdn::thumbdn:
Will not answer Questions... :thumbdn::thumbdn::thumbdn:
Wants 50$ for shipping... :thumbdn::thumbdn::thumbdn:

:jerkit:

Blurry, cell phone pictures.

Don't just look at the feedback percentages. Look at and read the negatives (if any), I've bought from sellers with "poor" feedback that were low feedback sellers. One disgruntled buyer (for good reason or not) can ruin a sellers feedback for a long time. Many times, you can tell from the negative feedback remarks if they were justified or not.

I'm scared to shop online at the moment because after buying a few knives and other stuff on the bay and other online stores I recently had three major fraudulent charges go through my account. I am currently disputing them...just sucks. I love shopping online especially for knives! I just got to be more careful now.

I've had in excess of 5,000 purchases and only ever had one flat-out scammer...and that was on a coin.

!
Always pay with a credit card!
!

Buy from established, long-term e-Bay sellers whenever possible.

Ask a question just to see how the seller responds. If he's not helpful and interested and friendly........forget him.

If the pics are lacking something, ask for a better pic. If the response is less than helpful, you've learned a lot about the seller.

If something is wrong with the item when you get it, don't be afraid to ask for a discount/partial refund. That's only fair and most sellers will give it.

I'm now over 1300 and only had one. It was a hijacked account selling stuff, but other than the aggravation of having to file a dispute and claim with PayPal, it wasn't a real problem.

I know many of the collectors on this forum have spent tons of time & money to put together the collections we all enjoy seeing on the forum.It's been years since I did the Bay.The last time was years ago and I bought a rifle sling from a man in NY.I mailed him a postal money order right away and as soon as he got it,he mailed the sling.It worked just fine.Do sellers still take postal money orders?I'm sure some of you guys have seen it all,when it comes to the Bay.Just don't want to DROWN out there! LOL

My advice. Forget the money orders. Go with PayPal, all sellers have to offer it or at least some kind of online payment. I've used PayPal since it's inception and I've never lost a dime or failed to get satisfaction. There are alot of online websites taking it now also. I believe that this forum even takes it for membership payments.

If I recall,I only did the Bay that one time and that was long ago.Thanks for the advice,maybe now I can shed my water wings & brave the depths of the Bay!:D ps If you see someone pop a flare out on the water,it's probably me!:eek:

:D Just jump on in there. Just sign up with PayPal and you will be fine. A few years ago, I bought a Parker Fly Supreme Guitar from a seller on there for a bit over $2K for my wife. That was by far (like 5 times) the largest amount that I had ever used PayPal for and the first ever guitar. PayPal contacted me BEFORE paying the seller to make sure that it was actually me doing the buy. I was very impressed with that.:thumbup:

Parker fly? wow haven't seen one of those in years. Neat guitars...still remember when they first came out. Sorry off topic.

To keep it on topic, here's a picture of the Ergo Hunter Small game Avid I just got in the mail a few minutes ago. Another eBay purchase that went without a hitch. Oh yeah, that's the Parker in the background. :D

Beware of rare or vintage claims. I have seen a 2008 standard 110 be advertised as vintage cause it was used and looked older. A great many sellers have no idea and will advertise but really have not Idea. Get to know the look of Macassar ebony and size of rivots, and such along with date stamps, then ask questions to the seller and if they cant give the info or better pics to prove what they claim-stay away. Check the stickys for date stamps and 110 data sheets on the main page and familiarize yourself. Its a lot of fun to try and determine version and variation based on the bay pic even if your not buying-good practice as well

I also firmly agree with Plum-paypal is free, easy and secure and will guarentee your purchases.

I don't want anybody to get the wrong idea here, so I'll clarify.

Smart buyers pay through Paypal, yes......but with a credit card.

When you sign in to pay with Paypal, you must look for the fine print at the top of the page where it says "Other Funding Options."

If you click on that you will be able to pay on your credit card.

Always use that choice because it gives you the option of doing a chargeback if things go very bad. You will not have that option if you just pay with Paypal.

Your credit card company will take care of you if a beef comes up between you and Paypal.......that's one last layer of protection that all smart buyers choose.

LOL, yeah. Rare and Vintage are two terms that are tossed around pretty regularly. That's not just for knives either.

BG42s ADVICE IS THE VERY BEST ADVICE POSSIBLE. Had only 1 sour transaction. Bought a computer for $1100. Seller just disappeared. Made claim through credit card and through Paypal. Paypal, after about a month, said, "yes indeed, he absconded with your payment, but we can't find him so you lose." Credit card Co. back charged Paypal and restored the $1100 to my account.

Telechronos:):):)
