I've been wanting to get a custom knife for awhile, particularly a Nealy. I clearly realize the risks of not being able to handle a knife before dropping a few hundred dollars on it, so I'd like to ask you guys about your thoughts on the Kinzhal.

There are not very many pictures of the Kinzhal posted online, and it seems that his past designs slightly differ from the current (the handles seem to be shaped symmetrically in his recent works). If any owners would be so kind to share pictures of their Kinzhal I'd be really grateful. A huge thanks in advance,
Vincent

Had tis one with me on a couple trips in Central America in the early 90s. Rounded the corners of the sheath for comfort - neoprene handle discoloration is from deet.

nealys are very good knives, i have a 5" M2 pesh kebz, a 3" PK and a amoeba and they are imho the very best FB knives for SD edc around, great sheaths too, i do suggest getting the MASS vs the MCS sheath system the MASS is my fav, the MCS i dont care for very much, IIRC he is phasing out the MCS anyway, the MASS will do anything the MCS will but do it a lot better, imho the MCS is kinda "cheesy" at least for how i carry a FB concealed, imho the MCS is an attempt to do a lot of things "ok" while not doing anything very well, for IWB carry the MASS is a LOT better.

Yeah, Bud makes some very good knives. This 5" Pesh Kabz went with me on subsequent CA trips, as well as a bunch "across the pond". Again rounded corners of the sheath. Best part of MCS carry system is the inverted jacket pocket option. While the magnets in the sheath work well for retention, they cause a little too much drag on the blade for any serious deployment speed. Most of the reasons I make my sheaths like I do, is in response to what was available for serious users when I started.

Mike--I really appreciate you taking the time putting up those pictures
I did some digging on Google and managed to find a fairly detailed picture of the "standard" model Kinzhal. I borrowed this photo from the webpage of a past auction by Arizona Custom Knives. From the picture of your Kinzhal, it's evident that Nealy's style has evolved over the years.

I have the Boker Bud Nealy Escort and while it is not in the same league as the Kizhal, it is a very good knife and draws very smoothly indeed.

IIRC the MCS still has (or had?) the magnets while the MASS dont.

imho the only modes of carry the MCS works well is like ya say in a jacket pocket of boot carry, and i honestly think the MASS will do it better, for IWB, the MCS with the liitle fabric (or nylon?) loop was just "cheesy" and since thats how i carry FB's i was disappointed to say the least, but i spoke with bud and he made me a MASS and i was (and am) very happy with that system, IIRC that was back when he just came out with the amoeba which was the 1st to have the MASS, i know i had never heard of the MASS at that time.

but they are very good knives and sheaths, as far as the MASS goes, i have several customs which are great knives but the sheaths are 2nd rate, imho the best knife/sheath combos are from either bud or al polkawski, they are imho the top guys to see when ya want a edc concealed carry FB for SD, it simply doesnt get any better than those guys.

FWIW---When I received my Leu Kozuka, I sold my Nealy.
Check out Leu Custom. :D
