hey, could you guys please discuss this knife?...looks like i might be getting one...is this a user or something to put on the shelf? how strong/durable? good value (im paying around 250)? ..thanks in advance for the info!

well, I don't think it would be a good 'user'. It's a double edged dagger with a cutout designed for limb trapping. It'll surely have Nealy's typical quality, but not a good design for typical tasks, I'd say.

Frankly, I think it's just as silly as a defensive knife. If you're gonna trap and clear, why in the world would a dull cutout work better than a sharpened edge?

It's not only for trapping. Say you insert a double edged blade into bad guys body then try to lever it, either to move him or to make a really nasty wound. Since both sides are cutting it will kinda spin in place. Also the blade can get embedded in bone if you try to lever in certain places. With the dull cutout flesh, muscle, tissue bunches up there providing a fulcrum with which to lever and/or snap the other end out. You can also place the dull portion against bones (ribs, vertebrae etc.) too for the same type of levering action and the blade won't bite and get stuck in the bone.

Would I be labelled a smarta** if I said that explanation speaks for itself? :) :)

Seriously, accepting the negative of a dagger-style edge geometry, then dulling a big chunk based on some odd corner case (where the more usual cases would seem to want a sharp edge there), seems like a horrible idea to me. I realize opinions vary, and the guy who designed this knife is well-thought-of. But it remains, to my mind, an over-designed gimmick.

Hey, it's cool, you're entitled to your opinion. Martial Blade craft however has many instances where what seems to be the most logical approach is ineffective and what seems at first blush like a "horrible idea" actually is the best route to go.

It looks the part, so I have no doubt it will be a well made knife that sells well. Not one I would choose to own though.
