Hi. One of my hunting buddies was by the house tonight, and i was sharpening and oiling up my Chris Reeves Sebenza and a CRKT Crawford-Kasper folder, and he took a look at them. He is really into guns, but not really into "better knives". His knife is a Smith and Wesson folder, so enough said. But he looked casually at the Sebenza, said it was "ok" and then picked up the CRKT and closely examined it, commenting how heavy duty it looked and all. I asked him which one he thought would be the more expensive knife, and he thought the CRKT!?!? But after showing him a few things about the Seb, he saw the picture more clearly(I hope).

I told him to be glad Chris Reeves didn't hear him lol - I guess sometimes only the afficianados among us appreciate things like the Sebenza.

Have any of you ran into something similar?

Most of my non-knife friends think I'm fooling them when I tell them just how much one of my knives cost...

Just proves my point that just because one costs 10x what the other cost, does not mean it is 10x the knife.

"Just looking" at a Sebenza isn't usually that impressive, unless it is a decorated or wood-inlayed (though I do find the stonewashed finish attractive and the blade shape appealling).

It's in the using that the inner beauty comes though...

I guess I must just have been more the perceptive type throughout my life.Even in my younger day's buying cheap knives,I knew enough about quality to see the difference in products, often there just wasn't a better quality product being openly offered that I was aware of.In fact when I was sixteen I pruchased my first Randall, thats when I was first able to afford a purchase of this type knife, instead of just an issue Ka-bar.The best thing about this site and previous sites,is it opened up alot of avenues to access high quality products, end user opinions etc.I have learned alot about materials, design etc.,but I have always had "good taste" so to speak.Quality observation doesn't end with knives,I anaylize all my purchases, whether it be a VCR or Car,gun,I always find myself going with quality over cost savings. In the long run you usually get what you pay for in most cases, knives are no exception.

As Mr. Fleischer points out, the unadorned Sebenza is not a particularly attractive knife. It looks chunky, clumsy, and simple to the uninitiated. The CRKT, on the other hand, looks fancy and shiney.

This only teaches again the age-old lesson about judging a book by its cover. This is a good lesson not just about knives, but about life in general.

Turn this lesson around next time someone is showing you something that is special to him or her and you're not particularly impressed. Maybe, this time, you're the uneducated rube. Maybe you should ask a few questions and allow yourself to be educated.

That's the nice thing about collecting anything. It gives you more of an appreciation of everything.

Gollnick, I see what you're trying to say, but I have to disagree with your choice of words. Being that it is a matte black handle with a bead blast blade, I think "Shiny & Fancy" are the last adjectives that would come to mind in describing the KFF. The CR, being all-metal, seems fancier in my mind.

This topic reminds me that even the crummy knives are a lot better these days than when I was young. It used to be that knives to impress the naive would be chrome plated. Relatives frequently gave me "wonderful" knives and swords that were made in India of cheap chrome-plated steel(?). My mother never learned to see the difference. Cheap stainless on cable TV shows are a lot better.

Now I am afflicted by people who go for serrations. Sigh!!

I've got a buddy who has a Buck 110 that is his pride and joy. He uses that knife constantly, as I do my Sebenza, and he can't see the difference. On some level I think he's better grounded, and that I am crazy for spending as much as I did. But then again it makes me happy.

Another aside: I gave my nephew a CRKT M-16 for Christmas year before last. As he was admiring every inch of the knife, I took out my Sebenza and in my most proud "Uncle" voice said "and maybe some day you'll graduate to something like your ol' Unc carries" and snapped open my Seb.

He looks at mine, then back at his, and says "Heck I wouldn't trade this for that any day!!!"

I didn't even try to explain.

i guess we all should be happy that there is a selection of knives like today - was not that many years ago a buck 110 was the top of the line (well almost?) i remember when you got a buck 110 or a gerber FS11, or a cheap imported folder. not that many years ago at all.

I agree with both RH posts here.

I've got CRKT (large) KFF and LCC DA.
LCC costs about eight times that KFF did - though for example blade doesn't center (in closed postition.)

In KFF it goes to the left, in LCC to the right - so average is perfect

Doesn't bother me - I use (and like) both blades.
KFF is my "outdoors" knife in winter and LCC during summer.

Ok, I must admit that KFF didn't succeed as good as LCC in my cardboard box slicing test, but no big deal - KFF was good enough.

And about cutting boxes - I keep at work M16-03Z for jobs like that. I've ruined about a dozen of boxes with it during past few months, and it is still "shaving sharp".

I am to the point where I do not even mention price. When asked I am very vague about it. Sure, a $30.00 knife will cut and I have grown tired of justifying my purchase of a $400.00 to $500.00 knife. In fact I don't really owe ANYBODY an explanation about how much I spend on a knife! Well, except my lovely wife that is. Unless you are a genuine knifenut you will never be able to understand the difference between a $30.00 knife and a $300.00 knife!
