Hi Guys,

SEE POST #32 for update Purchased Rockstead Shin DLC YXR7

I have been banging my head against the wall trying to figure this out. I am looking for a new EDC folder to bump a large Sebenza out of my main carry position. The Sebbie has occupied my pocket for about 6 years. While I love, it, I find myself wanting more lately. I have tried a few others, Spyderco's, Hinderer's, ZT and they are all nice and have kept most of them, just not the "one".

I have some seemingly very tough requirements and a custom seems like the way go as I cannot find anything production the fills the order.

1) Outstanding craftsmanship and tight tolerances
2) Bank vault lock-up
3) Newer steel choices (m390, s90 or similar)
4) Ti lock-side and scale
5) Blade length of 4 inches (or very close)
5) Order wait times of less that 3-4 months
6) Budget $1K or under

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! There is no better community better suited to help me figure this out besides BladeForums!!!

Regards,

Bravo

I would suggest making yourself more open to wait times if you have a budget like that, it will pretty much get you most customs out there. I think the Todd Begg Bodega might interest you though, and BladeHQ has some in stock presently.

+1 on making yourself more open to wait times. Most makers that charge that much have a pretty full book.

That being said, I ordered from Pohan Leu recently and his Bluephin covers all of your requirements except the steel. He uses S35VN but he does his own heat treat FWIW.

A Calavera Cutlery El Patron might be worth a look as well. Nothing fancy as far as steel goes (CPM 3V) but all the other boxes are checked.

Always Ray Laconico. The man is a genius. And as silly as this may sound, a Spyderco Southard meets just about all of your requirements and costs a fraction of what you're prepared to spend. It bumped a Large Sebenza out of my pocket. (I still carry my Small Sebenzas, though.) For $1K, in fact, you could buy a Laconico and a Southard and have money left over. :)

This should be fun! If I had that budget, I would probably buy a bunch of different knives. But, I assume you more than me already...

Shirogorov Mod 95 CF in S90V. Perfect fit. Amazing knife with the best attention to detail I have ever seen.

XM-24 all day long. Everyone will say they are overpriced, but they come for sale on the forum regularly. The thing with a Hinderer is that you can resell them easily.

Or get a CRK Umnamzaan (3.7 blade or something like that) and get a rock solid tactical at 400 and change.

PS: I own 2 XM-18's and think they are worth every penny I paid. I also own CRK's (but not the zaan). These are all knives that have long histories and are highly consistent in build quality.

I have definitely been considering a knife from Ray!!

I have owned a Zaan and an XM-18 and they are both quality knives for sure. I have an EMT/Medic credentials so I was able to get the Hinderer's at MSRP and they are good value at MSRP, street prices, not so much.

I actually like the SHIROGOROV designs, but the lack of USA support makes me very cautious, especially the myriad of issues I have seen out there in youtube land. Their bonded lock bar is very impressive.

I am not dying to spend $1k. If I can meet my requirements for less, that would be awesome!!

Check out Hobacks A10 - Medford is another great choice (Praetorian). For a real tank try a Praetorian Ti (its $200 over budget but very impressive)

Have you looked into a Robertson/Calavera large size Patron folder? He's got several steels to choose from... I believe he also does SM-100 :D

This is a very easy choice if you ask me.....

TODD BEGG BODEGA

Hands down what I would pick up, if you don't already have one.

A Shirogorov Mod 95 is a great choice, but id go with the Bodega first and foremost.

And while I love the MKT Pretorian, I personally think the Bodega is a much better EDC.

Todd Begg Custom Bodega Flipper with the Lightning Strike Carbon Fiber scales. Pocket Art, with a modern design.

Curtiss F3 4" it is. Meets all my requirements minus an exotic steel choice. Will be here from maker in about two weeks. I will post comments.

thanks!!
