First off I'm on a tight budget ($50max) I'm using an alice pack but it's really overkill, my whole kit weighs in around 20lbs. are they anything that would be more comfortable carrying 20lbs in my price range? I like the alice but find it not the most comfortable. I found a Kelty redtail 30 for around $40 bucks would i be better off with something like that?

Thanks for any info:)

I really like the Kelty Range, works great, and it has a thin waist strap that doesn't get in the way.

If you like mil surplus check out the USMC ILBE MARPAT Assault Pack. I found one for $40.

I have a Medium Alice pack w/frame and after market Kidney pad. It's way more comfy with the new kidney pad (Molle II) but my full day pack load out is around 20 pounds like yours. Every once in a while I consider switching to a Civilian pack and the 3 that I look at are the Kelty Redwing series, Alps Solitude series and the Outdoor Products Gama Internal Frame pack. The Gama is just under $50 locally or online, the Redwing and Solitude packs, I've found go for around $75 at the big shops up north.

If you look hard enough you can find the whole ILBE pack system for under $50. The market is flooded with them at the moment.

I have the redstart, which is similar to the redtail. It has very comfortable straps and is a decent day back, but really has no waist strap, at least nothing that's going to help with balancing the weight. 20lbs is at the top of the range of what I would want to try to carry in it for an extended hike. My opinion would be to wait until you can get into a lower level Osprey or Gregory - about $90, you'll be happier with it for longer.
