Budget Bowies

What's the ballpark budget?

Looking traditional/historical or just large-ish chopper fixed blade?

Any intended purpose other than being awesome?

Under $ 150.00 just for the awesomeness of a traditional Bowie type knife.

While it flys in the face of the classic Bowies, I believe the Cold Steel Drop forged Bowie could suffice. Especially at it’s price point. I’ve seen a few pictures of them stripped, sporting a leather wrap, you would hardly recognize it. Plus it’s a big ol’ chunk of 52100.

The Ontario SP-5 and SP-10 have a certain "Bowie-ness" I always find appealing. Not historically accurate, but still what I think a Bowie "is supposed" to look like.

Both under a C-note.

I have a Case Bowie that I think is pretty awesome.

I don't think I have ever "used" it for anything, but I did take it to elk camp to show off a couple of years ago and it drew many admiring looks. One of the old timers was fondling it and exclaimed "It's a Case!". He was a bit surprised that they made a Bowie.

I have an SP5 and it's one hell of a blade for the price. Usually between $55-60 and its impressive. Light and fast in the hand while biting deep on wood. It's not a looker in the way that, say, a Svord Von Tempsky would be, but it certainly instills the feeling that this is a serious hunk of equipment when you hold it.

After that, the obvious answer is to look at what Condor is putting out. They have a bunch. Dundee Bowie, Jungle Bowie, Operator Bowie, and then there's the Undertaker which is the one I'd pick if I wanted something of quality that screams BOWIE for a reasonable price.

I don't have experience directly with Condor's Bowie knives, but I have plenty of experience with their 1075 steel and HT, having heavily used a Bushlore in the past, and currently beating on a Moonshiner for going on 4 years now. They do an awesome job with 1075.

If you like the Ontario Bagwell bowies, you'll have to get lucky and have patience to score one for under $300. They're getting harder and harder to find and they were made with soft stainless steel. You'll probably be better off spending around $100 on a Cold Steel Laredo or Trailmaster bowie, or an old Gerber coffin handled bowie.

Great suggestions looking for something with this blade shape , the elongated clip point is something I really like .

It's a little over budget, but the CS Laredo leans toward the longish clip side of the spectrum, though admittedly not a long as what you've got pictured.

As others have mentioned, the Cold Steel Trailmaster or Laredo in O-1 and the Ontario SP-10 Marine Raider would be good options.

Rich, I've been looking for the same thing for over a year. Price is always more than I want. :( I will give you first dibs if I find one (I'll grab it and offer it to you for what it costs me, if I ever find one ).
