How about a budget flipper? How tough would it be to throw a flipper on a Tenacious for instance?

I've thought about the same thing on a few models. The only thing holding me back is not knowing the properties of all the different steels used and how they would hold up to TIG welding. I imagine it would hold up alright and wouldn't effect the heat treat being on the back side of the blade but the issue is not having any material to do test welds.

I don't think he meant literally weld a flipper on a Tenacious :p I think he was saying take that model and create a Tenacious Flipper version. If you have a TIG, and are skilled with I would like to see someone try. A $40 knife is not much to spend to have some fun and see if it is possible.

I've looked at some of my budget Spydies and modifying them into a flipper would be feasible. Way back when in a different life I was certified in a few welding processes and welding a flipper tang seamlessly would be simple but as I said, the metal composition is the variable since I'm not familiar with its properties. But I've been thinking  I bet I can peruse the bay and find buckets of cheap 8cr knives for cheap to test weld. If for no other reason than to satisfy my own personal curiosity.

The flipper is on the EDGE side of the blade. Remember, it usually doubles as a guard.

Thanks for clearing that up. :)

Although it's a fun idea to do some low budget mods the market is overrun with budget flippers already. But I agree with the OP, I wouldn't mind having one with a bug on it.

I would bet that if you modded a Tenacious into a flipper a bunch of guys here would be asking if you could do it for them. Tenacious line has its own sub-category in the "budget knives". If you mod it..... people will come ;)

I've been looking at my beat up Tenacious today and will give it some thought. Agreed, I think there's potential.

The tenacious pops open soo easy with the hole I don't see any benefit what so ever to a flipper version.

This is why I'm not really motivated to have a flipper on my Spyderco's. The hole just works too good. Funny, by definition it's an absence but it works better than something that is added.
