I have been in Legazpi, Philippines where I stumbled upon a few good deals for jungle trekking. I will be doing a jungle survival course here in the Philippines (Subic Bay) and had to round up another quick simple jungle kit for a friend who didn’t really have anything but a backpack. I just got him the basics to make sure he was at least going to be off the ground at night, dry and hopefully mosquito free as Dengue fever is very prevalent here.

Mosquito Net- 90 Peso/$2.12
Simple single person net.

Tarp- 105 Peso/$2.47
About 6’x8’ poly tarp with orange on one side and blue for the other.

Rope- 35 Peso/$0.82
Cheap clothing rope for hammocks and small lashings.

Hammock- 70 Peso/$1.65
Hand made in the Philippines, seems strong.

Arm guards/gloves (nylon and spandex)- 40/$0.94
These are worn all over Southeast Asia by Tricycle, Tuk Tuk, Rickshaw drivers to block sun and mosquito’s alike.

Bolo- 350 Peso/$8.24
This bolo was bought in Legazpi, home of the Mayon volcano. It is made from a ball bearing and kamagong wood. It has a tang that goes all the way through the handle and is locked (as they said) at the other end. It sports a 13 inch-long blade at about a hair under 3/16 inches-thick at its thickest right at the handle junction. From there it tappers down to about 1/16 inch-thin at the tip. The wood used for the handle is kamagong wood which is a hard wood here in the Philippines. The wooden sheath has a place for attaching a cord as worn by the locals here.

$16.25 total.

I will hopefully get a chance to try out everything in a day or two and see how well this bargain kit works out.

what are you using for footwear?.... we had 110" of rain in 40 days at Angeles City (Clark AFB) in 72....my toenails are still in pretty bad shape...

Blue suede shoes.

I understand the need to be in style. If it were me I'd go with Vibram 5 finger shoes. But those are $100 shoes and I doubt you could even find a store there that sells them. Of course where you're going may be dry so normal hikers may work.

Nice chopper! :cool::thumbup:

I'd like to get a pair of arm guard like you can find in Japan--they cover the arms and the back of the hand only, and the flap that covers the back of the hand is held in place by a cord that loops around the middle finger.

Love the $8 bolo. Great stuff as usual man, stay safe and take lots of pics!

Thats some kit that totally makes sense. Dig the Bolo. You should bring back one for me. Ill double the cost. lol You did forget a canteen.....Im guessing he has a water bottle. Another low key item would be a small led. Gotta see what your steppin on when its dark. An extra trash bottle to use as a piss bottle at night helps a ton when ya dont wanna venture out in the night.

Ruben I look forward to a trip report from the class, and how your bros gear worked out for him.

Anyways....great post amigo.

Heres my Bolo......Oh yeah. Sweetness. I did the handles and made the sheath. Gossman did the steel work.

Just a tip, when I was in south America the guide told us not to use white mosquito nets and if we had them to dye the dark green or black. Apparently Mosquitos are super attracted to bright colors especially yellow orange and white. Jus a tip if your gona use it in the jungle because even with a net they seem to get in if they are all over it so if you can stay off they're radar it's even better. Just a suggestion but still awsome kit
