I was trying to think of something to get my grandfather for christmas tonight and I'm into knives and he doesn't have any really nice name brand knives, I thought this would be a great idea.

I don't have much of a budget, something that I can buy local of course, less than $120 or so.

Looking for a set with steak knives as well, straight edge preferred.

Found a decent set I can buy local, thoughts? Its the "J.A. Henckels Statement 12 Piece Cutlery Set" from Macy's.

Don't get a set! It's been said before, and I'll say it again

Honestly, he'd be better off with one or two good knives of better quality. Is it critical that you be able to buy local? If so - look for dedicated cutlery stores and see what they recommend for a) a chef knife and b) a paring or petty knife. This plus a bread knife (optional) will cover all the bases! Quality over quantity.

I think a grandfather would be pleased with a set :)

Not everyone needs a super knife to do the tasks in the kitchen :)
I guess a Grandfather is over the age where he spends a lot of time in the kitchen.
When I grow old I wanna spend time in my chair with a glass of wine watching the sun go down for the evening.

Might check out Dubost Laguiole Stainless.

They come in a set of 4 and are great. The wood handled ones are way too pricey, but the stainless ones are great, what you have leftover can buy a nice chef's paring or petty.

Got him a Chicago cutlery 18 piece stainless set. Had about 500 positive reviews on amazon, got it from macys, same price of others. The blades are sharp, rigid, and they felt very nice. He isn't some five star production cook that needs a thousand dollar set of knives, just something of good quality, which I think he will be getting from that set.
