Any recommendations?

A quality modern style puukko blade would have to be the Mora 511. However, I am looking for something more traditional with a finished wood handle. Almost all the knives I came across tend to be well over $100. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

In the $100 dollar puukko category, the knives are usually made from blade blanks sourced from Lauri, Brusletto, Mora or Helle.

You can just purchase the blade yourself and make your own knife by setting it into wood and you could also embellish it with horn, spacers, etc to truly personalize it. Fittings and sheaths can also be ordered.

For example, I made my own version of the Kellam Wolverine (~$100) for
Lauri PT blade -$19.98
brass bolster - $2.99
butt cap - $0.50
traditional sheath - $14.98
+my own wood
total cost w/o shipping: $38.37

2 sellers of both finished knives and Scandi knife parts are Ragweed Forge and Ben's backwoods.

Oh WOW! that sounds like a really fun project. I think I am going to do that. It looks like it wouldnt require too many tools and I'll be able to handle it with what I have here.

Thank you so much!

I'll need to find some directions online. I am really curious as to how you make the slot in the handle to insert the blade.

Not sure if this one fits the bill - about 50 bucks, it my current EDC knife. Good steel, solid construction. Jarvenpaa #8224

Check out the Lapin Puukko line of knives. They are a real bargain, with lots of choices and are very affordable. Have fun looking.

I have the #3 Lapin puukko and I've been very pleased with it. http://www.ragweedforge.com/3003.jpg

It's just a bit more knife than a regular mora. I can't say it's worth 4 times the cost but I do like it better. I like the sheath is better and I like the flared pomel. It's the knife reach for for wood carving.

Since you have Ragars address

I do not know what size blade you want
I have the Wood Jewel #WJ-VI, Big Carving Knife with a 3 5/8" blade and a 4 1/2" handle from curly birch and antler with fiber spacers

The grind has a secondary bevel which took a lot of work to bring it down to a single bevel
I would not do it again

It is a lovely looking knife, quite a classic and a solid worker
I highly recommend it for both the price and the quality
