What is a good quality budget sharpening system that is similar to the Edge Pro Apex? I would like to re profile the edge on my Cold Steel AK-47 because the relief edge is terrible. it almost looks like it is chisel ground. I would also use this to improve the edges on some other of my knives but i really don't have the money for an EPA or a WE so I was wondering what would get the job done. I would like to keep it under $100 but I want as inexpensive as possible. What are your suggestions?

Hi Waldamir,

The Edge Pro Apex is fantastic. It is way too expensive IMHO, but there is nothing I have found to compare to it. Do you have any other sharpening systems already? I have found that the 4" diamond stones from the DMT aligner system will work in the Edge Pro with a spring added to the sharpening handle to take up the extra space that would be used by the 6" Edge Pro stones. If you can even get a used Edge Pro Apex for ~$100 or less and invest in some of the 4" DMT stones or some cheap grinding stones from http://www.congresstools.com/, you would have a better system than any of the possible alternatives. Congress Tools Moldmasters in the 6" x 1/8" size were just recommended to me in another thread.

Cheers!

I've never used an EdgePro but my basic Lansky setup works well for me. May also want to look at Gatco system as its very similar.

I just want to add that I think the little handheld systems from DMT, Lansky, and Gatco are great for what they are, but they are a real PITA for sharpening anything bigger than your basic folder with a 3" or so blade. The Edge Pro makes it no trouble to sharpen up my 10" chef's knife to a razor edge. I have moved on from the DMT aligner, and will never look back (I will continue to but DMT stones and stuff for the Edge Pro though).

The Edge Pro is so great because it DOESN'T hold your blade rigid in a clamp, so you can continuously reposition the blade to be sure you are at the same sharpening angle on all portions of the blade edge. The Edge Pro is like freehand sharpening with an extra steady third hand helping you out.

FWIW, I saw a used Edge Pro Apex on that famous auction site yesterday at a current bid a little north of $70. You might want to keep your eyes peeled for a deal there.

Schrade is making one that sure looks a lot like an EP, But I haven't read any good reviews on it... its called a Advant-Edge.

it may seem counter-intuitive, but the edge-pro IS the budget system. if i had just bought the EP in the first place i would have saved a fair bit of money on the other systems and stones i bought along the way. once i got the EP that search was over. i use eze-lap diamond stones (available in 1x6") on EP blanks and i love this setup.
