The new W&SS books sticky thread made me look at my wiki that I've been neglecting for many moons, since I had a page on there based on a list of books that Doc-Canada sent me a while back. While going through and deleting a hojillion spam pages, I came across a really neat article that I didn't even realize was there. Someone came on and wrote a pretty comprehensive guide on creating a budget survival kit.

Each item is thoroughly explained, with lots of pictures. He even went as far as calling out the name and price of each item, along with possible upgrades. The kit looks pretty solid to me, especially considering the price.

I guess I should pay more attention to my sites. :o Anyone want to be an admin?

Ah, crap. I posted this in the completely wrong forum. Hopefully one of the mods I PMed is still awake and can move it over to W&SS.

I got it!

I was thinking of your wiki but I wanted to see what we could come up with. As far as an admin, I have my own blog set so I have to approve posts. I get some real losers who think spam, vulgarity, and threats are clever. Little do they know, the sharks come when I call! :D

You want a wiki to be open to everyone to add information. But maybe not everyone, if it means constant cleanup. So you need to certify certain people to post at will, and others have their posts approved until you see they're good guys. That won't take long. Each new poster could have a way to write to the administrator to get put on the list, especially if you know them from here or another legit forum.

Hi !

Nice site and ideas , I think some survival kits are overthought with some very handy items missing.
One thing I add to all my kits no matter how big or small is the miracle drug Ibuprofen , it has helped more times than I can count for back aches or over strenuous activity.
Another item often overlooked is a toothbrush ! There is no dentist in the bush. A quality toothbrush costs a couple bucks , add a little tin/film container of salt/baking soda and you are good to go , you can cut down your toothbrush to make it smaller for your kit.

Once more thanks for that site , it will make for good reading tommorrow.

edit - Esav's shark is large and toothy !

Yeah, I've got my forum and blog both locked down pretty well, but I have let the wiki languish for about a year and there was a LOT of spam on there. What I need to do is have a couple more admins (any volunteers?) that can restrict pages when they start seeing spam on them, but still allow the creation of new pages by unregistered folks. I don't want to require registration, since some really good articles were started by unregistered folks. Spammers seem to stick to the discussion pages for their crap, which makes policing and cleaning a bit easier. They also seem to stick with the same IP for a lot longer than I am used to seeing, so banning a single IP actually helps, for once.

"no" to admin. But I briefly read list above and it looked good; and I will read more later.
Concerning : The 10" steel tentpegs, ONE 8" steel should be enough. You can drive
steel to create a hole, that wood or plastic can use
. Surveyors use this method all the time.
So unless you have a special reason to have steel tent pegs, just carry one; or in some
cases none at all are needed.

Edit:
Now I read more and he is adding large gutter nails. So he is ever so slowly balancing,
the weight/strength/numbers. You do not always need a peg hole where it first appears
that you do. With extra parachute cord, you can usually run quite a distance to a tie off.
I have pitched tents on solid (flat) rock by this method. I carry extra cord rather than
extra steel pegs.
