The warden wanted to lose some hooks, so we tossed some rods in the trunk and off we went. Sometimes you run what you brung, and the Mule was on my hip today.

Damn good post upnorth.

Buffalo? Awesome stuff. I've never seen one up close before. Couple more months and we'll be looking to use a Mule on a deer. :D

Very cool pictures. There are a few buffalo that range just south of me on a ranch/farm, but I've only seen them as close as the Interstate.
Great knife. I have the Desert Mule, and it is one solid beast.

I'm wanting one of the new G10 Mules. Not sure why, but I do. :D

Nice post. I've seen a few buffalo. Here's some from Custer Park in South Dakota. You can see how big that bull buffalo is compared to a Ford Ranger:

Thanks bud. Maybe I should re name as down south. Had to relocate from the Boreal region because of my job. Oh well. A guy can still find the lakes and treed valley bottoms if you want it bad enough. Cactus in Canada, who would have thought...........:D

Typical of me. I get a knife, make a quick assessment after limited use and semi ignore it. I think that it was the weight that put me off initially, particularly compared to a FFG Endura. But Spyderco has pared the Endura down so much that it almost feels delicate\flimsy to me (although I still like them). The Mule is crow bar tough compared to the Endura. I came back to the Mule a few years later and now appreciate it as a tough unit. And I had this one extremely sharp.

Super excellent pictures. :thumbup:The warden popped ours off from the car at longish distance. Good Lord those big bulls are a solid chunk of meat\muscle.

Thanks. I have several others. They're magnificent creatures.

It's hard to imagine a herd of a million of those bad boys running. Must have been a sight.

The Mule is on my radar.. Buffalo is some good eating. Burgers, oh my!

I've only tried buff. a few times and it didn't stand out to me, so it must have been mild, not very gamey. Yupper I think that I had burgers also and they were fine. I seem to remember an Elk roast once as mild also, but quite dry because it was extremely lean. I suppose there are different factors creating a gamey flavor. Is it rutting season and the animal pumped with hormones ? Was it running or distressed before death, adrenalin ? Are you eating meat from a grasslands area?, then grass fed game is closer to your palate. Eastern corn fed beef tastes noticeably different than western grass fed beef, as an example.

You bet. I am a bit of a history wonk and have read a fair bit about being back in the day. Primarily due to my hobby of metal detecting. I have relics dating back to the 1780's or so. Pretty amazing considering that this time period was so early for western North America. Anyway...................... they say that there were way less trees on the plains then, because of the millions of buffalo. And because of the buff slaughter and intensive farming we have lost the prairie wolf (not coyote), plains grizzly bears and Cougars. Although it is well documented that Cougars still occasionally make it out to the plains, same as moose, which follow the river valleys. The community that I just left had a documented Cougar sighting this year. These predators historicly followed the herds and fed on the weak, sick, dead.
