Hi,
I'm not a collector of Schrade Knives and know nothing much about them.
I happened to find a Buffalo Bill Cody Commemorative knife in the original blue satin box, complete with a commemorative coin, that I have had packed away for over 20 years. Could anyone tell me if it has any collector value?
Thanks!

Yes, if it is mint and complete it does. Mr. Voyles listed it in his 1995 book as a $40 value with a $35 issue price. I can't give you a current value, but it has not increased a whole lot in the past ten years. You might search eBay ended listings for a realistic view of what they have sold for recently.

G'Day, I recently purchased the same item on Ebay for U.S. $41.03. Item No 170023204260 if you care to check it out. Nice knife, why not keep it and cherish it for another 20 years as it is obviously not appreciating at the current time...but who knows what the future holds? Hoo Roo from Oz.

Thanks for your reply Larry........I think I'll take your advice and put it back up. My four year old son just might appreciate it one day!

There were supposedly 5,000 of these made. So they would not be as "rare" as a knife where only 1,500, or 500 were made. The length of time since they were made, and natural attrition leads to few being seen on the market now. I call this "apparent rarity", perception rather than reality.

I personally believe that most Schrade commemoratives and limited editions are underpriced, with many at or below their MSRP issue price, and only a few bringing premiums. It may well be years before the market shakes out and settles down well enough for a price guide to give valid, reliable dollar values. How many years is anyone's guess. And an issue may be desirable (in demand) without being "rare", or "rare" without being desirable.

Mr. Voyles wrote a dissertation on this subject in his 1995 IBCA Price Guide to Commemorative Knives and I highly recommend that you read it.

Voyles said:
The "My Dog Spot" commemorative may sell well to the "My Dog Spot Memorial Comittee", and Spot may appreciate it, but the real value in commemoratives comes years down the road, and most often when it is tied with some historical event.

ISBN is 0-87341-420-9
