how durable are the buffalo handles are they prone to chipping and cracking? i it o.k. to leave the knife in a hot car? thanks

Horn is pretty durable, but it can crack if it gets really dry. Your best bet is to keep it moisturized with something like Hooflex, or some other lanolin-containing product. You can also use mineral or olive oil, as well as a host of other products. I wouldn't necessarily recommend keeping a khuk in a hot car, but it might be ok.

The laha will soften before anything bad happens to the horn, as long as it is conditioned. You get that desert heat in So Ca, and leave it in a car long enough without some conditioning, it might crack. Wood might too, but probably not as much. It's worth noting I live in dry Eastern Montana, and the only handle I have that is cracked significantly is wood.

have you had ever had/known of a problen with the blade coming of the handle? looking at the blade and handle i dont see any pins and the knife is not a full tang just a partial tang.

Did I forget to welcome you to HI forum? Welcome, if I did, and welcome again, if I didn't.

I've never heard of a blade coming out of a handle. It would get loose first.
But if you observe safetly rules about handling, even a flying blade would not be a injury. No one should be in front of your swing.

Not a problem. The "partial tang" is thicker than you will ever be able to break unless you are superman. On most models, it runs the length of the handle, tapering slightly, and is actually peened over at the butt of the handle to make a very sturdy attachment.

I've had a horn handled Chiruwa AK (the full tang, pinned handles) in my truck for 3 years in the South. The horn will shrink a little as it drys, but it's still very durable. I've had to file the steel of the tang to make it flush again.
