So I've never used horn. I got a pair of scales today. Just wondering, if I wanted to make them thinner, could I use a hand plane and plane material off? I have no idea how this material would respond? Splintering or pullout?

I have no belt sander, but lapping it with 60 grit on a hard flat surface is an option. I just think the block plane would be faster.

Any feedback appreciated.

Buffalo horn is basically a bundle of buff hair stuck together. The 60 grit will take it down in a hurry. I don't think the plane will be of much use. Buff horn does work well with a file.

I was about to ask this very thing. I have access to a jointer and wondered if the material could be buzzed down a little at a time using it?
