I like using water buffalo horn on my knives but have a great deal of difficulty finding nicely figured horn that I prefer.
The other day I was rummaging around in my box of horn looking for a decent piece when I came across some red dyed horn that I was talked into buying which by the way isn't red all of the way through and I spotted a slight colour shift behind the red skin.
To make a long story short I sanded and polished it and found the prettiest figuring that I have seen in a long time so I sanded down all of the rest of the red dyed horn I had and discovered a treasure trove of figured horn.
I am not sure why the horn was dyed in the first place as it cannot be used as a handle scale without sanding the red surface off but for those who like highly figured horn take a second look at the red dyed horn at the next show.
